I agree with your 9/11 comment. There was a continuing hot and cold war between Western vs Islamic fundamentalism which the former Soviet Union started.

Now, there's an ongoing cold war, turned hot which Russia started, between democracy and authoritarianism (Russia, Hungary, Brazil, China, etc.)
