"Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Thursday whitewashed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's autocratic record, presenting the authoritarian leader's approach to politics as a model for the United States. He has said authoritarian Hungary is freer than the U.S..

It's also not just Freedom House that has raised concerns about Orbán. Numerous human rights organizations, democracy watchdogs, political scientists, and historians have underscored the myriad ways Orbán has tightened his grip over Hungary's political system while maintaining the veneer of democracy.

Reporters Without Borders in July, for example, pointed to Orbán as one of the world's 37 "press freedom predators."

In an interview with Insider last year, Sheri Berman, a professor of political science at Barnard College and author of "Democracy and Dictatorship in Europe," said, "At this point, Hungary is a full-on dictatorship. No if, ands, or buts."

Orbán is unabashedly xenophobic and bigoted, instituting policies against migrants and the LGBTQ community that have been condemned worldwide.

"The government used the Covid-19 pandemic as a pretext for attacks on the rule of law and democratic institutions," Human Rights Watch said of Hungary. "The government has made access to asylum close to impossible, interferes with independent media and academic freedom, and undermines the rights of women and LGBT people, including blocking the implementation of the Istanbul Convention that aims to prevent violence against women."

But Carlson, who has espoused white supremacist conspiracy theories on his show and routinely attacks immigrants, effectively did what amounted to PR for Orbán. The Fox News host presented the Hungarian leader as a pro-family leader who protects his country's borders, without mentioning how the European Union's supreme court — the European Court of Justice — in the past year ruled that Orbán's government has been illegally deporting refugees to Serbia.

Orbán's border policies are driven by ethnonationalism, and he's made no secret of this. "We do not want to be diverse," Orbán said in a 2018 speech, adding, "We do not want our own color, traditions, and national culture to be mixed with those of others."

In the interview that aired Thursday, Carlson gave the Hungarian leader a platform to promote this worldview and bash his Western critics."

The way I see it, forced diversity from other nations to Hungary is bad. The western liberalism looks mad that Hungary isn't conforming to their open border and degenerate ways. I don't get why they can't just leave Hungary alone and let the rest of Europe do their 'experiments' with this type of society. How's the crime or terrorism in Hungary?

So to be authoritarian you must:
-Not dilute your culture
-Not take in refugees/migrants
-Not support LGBTQ+

Talk about status quo change. Until Obama came along, gay marriage wasn't even a thing and no one made a big fuss then (besides the LGBTQ community of course).

Anyway I support Hungary besides the woman thing you mentioned and free press if that's the case. Do they have free and fair elections? If so, what's the problem again?

Orbán can suspend existing laws or enact new ones—all with de facto parliamentary approval and without a known end date. The law also criminalizes spreading false or distorted facts that interfere with the public safety or are “suitable for alarming or agitating” the public, crimes punishable by several years in prison. Concerningly, this language is vague enough to cover anyone who challenges the government’s preferred narratives and handling of the coronavirus. With lower courts already suspended and the path to the Constitutional Court unclear, it’s difficult to envision the legislation being challenged. As legal sociologist Kim Lane Scheppele writes in the Hungarian Spectrum, Orbán’s “emergency gives him everything he ever dreamed of: The absolute freedom to do what he wants.”

THAT is authoritarian although there is some similarities to what's happening under the current Biden administration as with the previous on 'certain' topics as you've already seen that could be considered authoritarian-lite.

Most people are unaware that there were cities, kingdoms and Empires throughout Africa where various people traveled. There were active trade routes throughout the continent. Trade was with Arabs, Indians and Chinese as well as Europe. Half the gold in Europe during the Middle Ages came from Africa.

Richest man in history was Mansa Musa, king of the Mali Empire.

Portugal ruined Africa with their greed.

A larger percentage of African-Americans are Christian than other American groups. People underestimate their conservative values.

So the March 30th decree was rescinded two months later. Why didn't your article mention that? Because they, and you, are lying POS's.

By the way, all of that 'dictatorial power' supposedly given to Orbán is EXACTLY what the Democrats did in the U.S. Democrat governors shut down their states with NO approval from their legislatures. And Democrats squelched 'fake news' about Covid, and sent people to jail and shut down business for violating quarantine.

Orbán was re-elected in a democratic election in 2018, and the next election will be held in 2022. How in the hell is that a 'full-on dictatorship'?
