What do you think of Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act that just got signed by Trump?

Is that a game changer? Does that mean it makes the trade deal more difficult to be signed by US and China?

reply

It does but trump had no choice but to sign it since it passed Congress with veto proof majorities. Unanimous in the Senate and 417-1 in the House.

Had he not signed it, it would have become law after 10 days regardless.

reply

Yep. I thought he's gonna veto it and procrastinate until this bargain chip serves his purpose right. Guess after all he's not that willing to piss off his alliances and opponents.

reply

I think he's obviously willing to piss off allies and opponents (except Putin), he's just not willing to suffer the public humiliation and defeat of watching his veto be overridden by Congress.

Same thing happened in 2017 when Congress by near unanimous consensus passed additional sanctions on Russia for their election interference. He balked but didn't dare risk the early defeat of having his veto overridden, so signed the bill begrudgingly. But he did drag his feet kicking and screaming the whole way when it came to ordering Treasury to follow the congressional mandate and.enforce the sanctions.

What's funny is how his supporters later tried to point to sanctions as evidence he'd been tougher on Russia than any previous president when that was all due to Congress.

reply

Nice input! Thanks.

He's not willing to piss off MBS either. Would be interesting to see how he'd react to a Saudi Arabian Human Rights Act. That country needs it more than China.

reply

Has it made its way out of committee yet? Last I remember it was being stalled by his stooges in the Committee on Foreign Relations and prevented from a floor vote.

reply

I have no idea. Last I heard it passed the House a few months ago and that was it.

Interesting AP reported this yesterday:

The Trump administration has quietly released more than $100 million in military assistance to Lebanon after months of unexplained delay that led some lawmakers to compare it to the aid for Ukraine at the center of the impeachment inquiry.

No coincidence this happens just when Senator Chris Murphy alerted the public how aid was being withheld.

Best guess is this was being done at the behest of the Saudis. MBS has been at loggerheads with Lebanon for awhile.

Remember when the communist Democrat media/party and their lemmings told us how China would destroy the US in a trade war? And our economy would collapse?

Stock markets have set over a hundred new record highs since.

Unemployment continues to set new record lows.

The thunderous Trump boom rolls on.

Meanwhile we have the communist Democrat party on the verge of bankruptcy. Unable to find a candidate to stick around more than a few months despite “leading” in all their so-called polls.

With the communist Democrat party now on the verge of bankruptcy, how many are working with China behind closed doors? They have an extensive record of working with our communist enemies. By the late 60s they supported North Vietnam. The 70s and 80s is was their comrades from the Soviet Union. The liberal lion Ted Kennedy with the Soviets in the early 80s. In the 90s to now it’s been Cuba and Venezuela. Telling us what wonderful free education and healthcare these pillars prosperity provided their peoples. Obama kissing Putin’s ass telling him he’d “have more flexibility” to dismantle our nuclear weapons once he was re-elected.

When it comes to protecting and helping the United States against communism, the communist Democrat party is always on the wrong side. Their track record confirms it.

Convincing thought! Thanks for sharing.

I support it. Just another way to apply pressure on China - let them feel it from all sides. And those Hong Kong protesters love Trump. He is the one world leader that is really taking a public stand on their behelf

reply

Yep. He's pushed by Congress. Just went with the flow.

reply

Trump isn't known for just doing what Congress wants, in fact, he is infamous for the opposite, but in this case, their interests are aligned.

reply

Not really seeing as how his interest is in getting a trade deal. This law isn't going to help him get one.

reply

He has more than one interest in the region. One is getting a trade deal with China. Another is countering China's aggressive expansionism in the region.

reply

Let's not kid around. Trump really didn't give two shits about the quest of the protesters when he was ready to sacrifice them at the altar of a trade deal.

It's just that bipartisan pressure in the form of veto proof legislation made that trade-off no longer possible.
