They get combat pay.

It's not always about money. There's something called patriotism. Many of them are proud to serve their country and want to defend her against foreign enemies. That's priceless.

reply

Exactly. When I joined the Army I didn't do it for the money. There were other reasons but serving my country was at the top that list.

Leaders (political and corporate) start wars for power and money. Soldiers who fight don't.
Hitler wanted power. On the flip side, there are the leaders/soldiers who defend against attacks form aggressive powers.

I disagree with the U.S. as an invading force in Afghanistan. That was more defense after 9/11. Iran was an invasion for oil, though.

Bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan, which is next to Afghanistan. Yeah, he was from Saudi Arabia, but if he's not at home, do you wait for him to move back to his old home or do you look for his new home? What resources are we getting in Afghanistan currently?

reply

Bin Laden and the Taliban were based in Afghanistan. The Soviets and the U.S. had a proxy war in Afghanistan for years. The U.S.nadvertently helped create Bin Laden's Taliban in order to fight Soviets. But, I blame the Soviets because they overthrew the Afghanistan leader and invaded the country in the first place.

U.S. is not going to war with "ally" Saudi Arabia. The U.S. helped a few rich Saudis including some Bin Ladens to flyout of the country days after 9/11.

Overall, there is no real profit. Wars cost billions (sometimes trillions) paid by taxpayers. True, the well-connected get rich like Cheney and associates who made billions by billing the American taxpayer. But, it's better to avoid war and lower taxes or use the money to benefit society like fix infrastructure, build affordable housing, help veterans, etc. Former President Eisenhower warned against the Military–industrial complex. I agree with him.

How much profit did the US get from the Vietnam war and Korean war? How about the Civil War?

reply

[deleted]

The US lost the Vietnam war, so how much should the Vietnam vets get, per you? How about Korean veterans? We didn't win that one either. What about Afghanistan? Are we making money down there?

Maybe the US should just withdraw all military aid across the world and just make the countries pay us for our service, yes? The US will pull out of NATO, yes?

reply

[deleted]

So what's the answer? I know some Vietnam vets? What are the profits? I'd like to know how much his cut should be.

reply

[deleted]

If the US was pushed out of Vietnam and Vietnam fell under a Communist regime shortly there after, I'm trying to find out how we profited. Did the US profit from that war? I know some Civil War ancestors too. Did the US profit from that war too?

reply

[deleted]

So instead of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, the profits should go to the soldiers?

reply

[deleted]

So we pay out profits to soldiers and companies that should've received those profits don't receive any so they stop making weapons and begin selling weapons to other countries that will pay them those profits, thus US losing the technological advantage in war. Is that a good outcome?

reply

[deleted]

So the outcome that we can't win a war is a good outcome in your eyes? Good luck with that.

I keep telling you to move to Venezuela. It would solve all of your issues here and you'd be that much closer to your desired communist state.

Hindsight is 20/20. Who took us in to Vietnam? JFK. Why? Because of Cuba and Soviet expansion. It's easy to say now we never should've gone in the first place, but given the times, I totally understand. Same thing with the Korean war and I'm sure South Korea is EXTREMELY HAPPY we did.

reply

[deleted]

Your facts are wrong, but what's your point?

reply

[deleted]

Again, hindsight is 20/20. What happened in the 50's? McCarthyism. Do you know what that is? How old are you? You've got an extremely naive perspective of history and the world.

We all just want Israel to be safe. We need to accept that Israeli companies make a profit.

The profits come from the sale and use of weapons. The “profiteers” are the US government politicians and their friends that have ties to military manufactures. Long time Democrat Diane Feinstein comes to mind. She and her husband made hundreds of millions.

As for Vietnam, the military didn’t lose the war. The politicians back here lost it. The communists who run the Democrat party/media lost the war so their hero’s in North Vietnam could take over.

Vietnam has become a real economic powerhouse since we left. Once the communists in North Vietnam exterminated millions of south Vietnamese the countries prosperity really took off for the people. Have you seen their cutting edge electronics and automobiles? Complete communist S hole. Well done Democrats.

Compare that to South Korea that held off communism. A true economic success. Samsung, LG, Kia, Hyundai.

reply

No, it wasn't the military's fault, but Westmoreland wasn't the right guy. It was only after he was replaced did progress begin to happen and the war weariness in the US was maybe too much. I'll give credit for Ford pleading to Congress, but when they said no, Vietnam was doomed.
