It's not the actor that is any good, its the role and movie they are in

i hate all these famous actors and actresses like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence who are no better than anyone else but get roles in movies that lead to oscar nominations and awards

seriously, studios like to build a select few up so that for future movie releases, seeing their names attached to a movie means more profit

i can prove its not the actor and its just the role.

put Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in a new F13, SAW, or any lower budget horror or B movie and see how many oscars they win based on their "extraordinary" acting talent. it will be zero

i wish hollywood would give other actors and actresses a chance to be in better movies instead of the same ones we always get

"It's JUST the role" is bollocks. Take the best movie with the best written script ever, and put the wrong actor in the role, and you risk to ruin the whole movie. Horror movies again often work with stereotypes, character development doesn't happen that much. The secret is to have the right actor for the right role, and a good actor will be able to adapt to a larger variety of characters and work with it to make the very character their own. There's a type of actor who occasionally has a clause in their contracts that they're allowed to more or less massively alter the character and work that out together with the author and director. That doesn't necessarily mean it'll become great, but it's far from just "reading the lines", and the chances you get something outstanding aren't bad.

That being said, yes, there are actors that are built up by the studios, because they bring profit. But those actors aren't automatically considered outstanding. Take Chris Evans. OK actor, not more, but built up mostly because the kids like him. Movie industry isn't welfare, that's a fact.

The extraordinary is in what we do,not who we are.

BINGO and well said, Kurt!! I couldn't agree more. The writing and production values are the most important. The actors are just along for the ride.

BUMP.

I think casting can be a huge deal, but it really just depends on the actor. For example, you know Leonardo Di Caprio is good because he is good in everything he is in - no one is lucky enough to get only good roles.

But at the same time...I agree that studios pick favorites regardless of talent and then put them in everything - heck, often picking people who have little talent.

To add, I think sometimes good actors - especially when there are many in one film - can butcher well written films.

Lots of good actors have elevated shit movies and made them hits. Lots of crap actors have ruined good movies.
