Wow, that's a big list. I haven't seen hardly any of them. Of course I wasn't born until 1970, and I don't generally like horror as a genre.

I did see Orca, though, and I agree. Definitely a hidden gem.

reply

I would say Blood Simple for a hidden gem horror. Not sure when it came out. Early 80s I think.

reply

Solid. Reminded me I've had a copy of Dark Waters for years that I've never gotten to. Couple goodies for your effort, though you've likely seen:

The Children (2008)
The Living and the Dead (2006)
The Shout (1978)
Der Fan [The Fan] (1982)
Pin (1988)
Fritt vilt [Cold Prey] (2006) - not the biggest slasher fan, but this one impressed. The sequel is even better, but the third was weak, imo.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004) - English horror satire TV show a genre fan might enjoy

I'll check it out if I can find it. Always looking for a good scifi.

Have you seen Supernova? It got panned but I didn't think it was that bad. Some kinda cool sciency stuff in it, also James Spader and Angela Basset. Can't beat that.

There's alot of underrated "hidden gems" for movies

Wonder Boys
Outland - Sean Connery as a cop/sheriff in outer space. Basically its a sci fi movie that acts like a western movie
Subspecies 1, 2, 3 and 4
Puppet Master 4
Puppet Master 5
Student Bodies
original April Fool's Day movie
Eating Raoul
Day of the Triffids
Psycho III
Edge of Sanity
Wizards
Black Cauldron
Bubba Ho Tep
Crime Wave
Muliplicity
Shrunken Heads
Malignant
Dante's Peak
Time Bandits

reply

Bubba Ho Tep. I've never seen that but I've been intrigued. What's it about?

reply

Bubba Ho-Tep is Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley and Ossie Davis as JFK living in a convalescent home. An ancient Egyptian mummy comes there to suck the souls out of the residents there. It's up to Elvis and JFK to save the day. It's a silly, campy comedy but what makes it funny is that they play it serious as hell LOL.

reply

I knew it had something to do with Elvis. Sounds fun. I'll have to check it out.

reply

And I thought of a couple more:

Henry Fool and the sequel, Fay Grimm

Judging by your list, here are a couple comedy/drama/romance movies I've enjoyed (7-8/10) that have ~20K IMDb votes or fewer. It's not a genre mix I'm particularly rabid about; I just like good movies, so take that as a kind of endorsement... (U.S. titles)

Heaven Can Wait (1978) - the original is good, too
Closely Watched Trains (1966)
Into the Night (1985)
Last Night (I) (1998)

And opening up the genre restriction to stuff that I am rabid about (8-10/10) that I don't see on enough "best" lists, if any:

It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012) - profound introspection
Alone in the Wilderness (2004) - happy place doc.
The Dish (2000) - charming comedy
My Favorite Year (1982) - should be a household name comedy
UFO (2018) - low budget thoughtful sci-fi
I Am a Hero (2015) - manga-based zom-com

reply

Thanks for your input. I haven't heard of most of these, but I'll try to find them. I wasn't trying to exclude or include certain genres. I like most, with the exception of horror and musicals. Though I do love Grease. But, like you, I like most anything that is done well, regardless of genre.

I thought of another one. It's a comedy and it's called Outside of Providence. At one point this kid has to blow into his bong to try to convince his dad its a new instrument he's taken up.

reply

My pleasure. I wouldn't say I go out of my way to see musicals, but there are so many that occupy such high honors in cinema it's impossible to not have many checked off their classics list, and who doesn't love Grease? IIRC, it was the third-highest grossing film of all time behind Jaws and Star Wars until Empire came out.

That scene rings a bell... Maybe a personal one...

reply

Did you ever see Hail Caesar! by the Coen brothers. There's a scene in there that parodies the classic musicals. Hilarious.

reply

Though that wasn't one of their best, it still got a positive rating and some laughs out of me, as they all have. Have seen all of their films, many multiple times, with the one exception of A Serious Man for some reason.

I saw this a long time ago. Don't remember much, just the spiders!!!

reply

Yeah it was definitely not bad. Should really be more well-known. Don't know why it's not.

reply

This one is part of an imaginary trilogy in my head, along with Angel Heart and The Serpent and the Rainbow. Usually end up watching them together.

reply

That's an awesome combination!! 👍👍

I enjoyed both Angel Heart and The Serpent and the Rainbow. Are they a trilogy? They don't seem to have any actors or plots in common, other than being horror.

I'm watching Rachel's Wedding. Not a horror movie, but pretty good.

reply

Nah. Just the imaginary one in my head. :) They all involve various angles on the juxtaposition of modern white city folk beliefs and old world Afro-Caribbean magical/spiritual beliefs and all came out in the same two year period. Other than that, I just like 'em all, so they tend to get watched in proximity to each other. I rank 'em AH 8/10, TB 7/10 and TSatR 6/10. If you liked them all as well, I'm buying your denial of being a horror fan less and less. :D
