I agree with whynotwriteme, her having sex with the fishmonster was actually disgusting. It was not just about the look of the creature. What I found repulsive as well was that the creature was shown to be something like a cross between say a human and a gorilla in intelligence. Granted I stopped watching the movie after the bathroom sex scene, maybe the creature was shown to be a genius after this point, but leading up to the sex it did not display human level intelligence. It felt more like an animal which made her having sex with it extremely repulsive. In my mind that is a normal reaction. As humans we have this innate disgust response to things like siblings having sex, incest, bestiality etc. I guess it's an evolutionary thing. I am guessing we will see a twist in episode 9 where Rey is revealed to indeed be, like you put it, a somebody. Reason for it would be all the fan critique. Could just be explained as Kylo having lied. Granted if she turned out to be a Skywalker after all it would be pretty strange how Luke and Leia didn't know but the scriptwriters will come up with some reason. Even if the explanation is a bit convoluted it's not going to matter much. People will cheer in the cinema and think it's awesome. Makes sense JJ would like some "I am your father" like reveal in his movie. He likes to copy stuff after all ;) Like you say there is nothing wrong with enjoying movies without thinking to much about the plot and characters etc. Plenty of movies are just designed to be a fun roller coaster. I can for sure be entertained by a script wise very typical shallow blockbuster. I think had I not been a big Star Wars fan I would have been a lot less critical. I would still have sighed and rolled my eyes at tons of stuff in TLJ, probably thought it was a bad movie but at least critique about Luke and how the movie ties together with the rest of the saga would be non existent. And yes just to paint a target at my back, throwing it out there, I liked the prequels. Tons of problems in them but I could accept that since the world building and expansion of the universe was so well done. In my opinion they added so much to Star Wars as a whole. Disney SW I feel haven't done this, so there is nothing for me to grab onto. Had they given a great story and world building I would for sure have liked them even if they had tons of faults. In regards to movie critics being able to spot a bad script. I grant you it's strange. Though one should have in mind that the vast majority of them are watching SW without any knowledge about how the movie should tie back to lore and the saga. Can't fault them for not spotting those kinds of things. Also it's a very beautiful movie visually. Still it's strange how everyone just gave it straight A:s. In regards to your question, this movie was in my opinion done in such a way that you can't really analyze and try and figure everything out. I am not saying this because I dislike the movie it's just the way it seems apparent to me. The script is clunky and a lot of stuff doesn't even really follow the established Star Wars universe rules as we know them and creates problems going forward( Yoda force ghost affecting the real world, Holdo using going into hyperspace as a weapon, Rey "downloading" with the force etc). The plot is contrived and don't stand up to scrutiny. In short, there are no profound answers to be found for a lot of the problems. The scriptwriters winged it and now a lot of stuff is invented to answer a lot of the problems. Whatever answers we get in the final episode will not be because there was a grand plan. There is nothing to figure out at this point. So in order to enjoy the movie you have to take it for what it is, a cool blockbuster SW movie that is more about visuals and feelings rather then lore and making exact sense in context with previous canon. Basically as a Star Wars fan you have to be a bit relaxed and not look to closely. Lots of stuff will just be "because it happened off screen or just because". If you can accept that you can enjoy the movie. Personally I can't. Always loved the lore behind Star Wars, happened more then once that I lost myself reading Wookieepedia about various stuff finding half and hour had gone by. That attitude, that nerd attitude isn't really suited for TFA or TLJ. The new canon is not as convincing because it feels more "artificial, not genuine". Thus not as interesting. In my opinion ofc. New Star Wars is, as I wrote, more about feelings, nostalgia and visuals. The whole Canto Bight thing( and thus Rose) could easily have been cut. It actually makes for a better movie. All that time could have been used to show what we as viewers actually care about and are emotionally invested in, Rey, Kylo, Luke and Poe. I absolutely hated The Last Jedi. Thought the script was atrocious and that the movie broke to much of the "in universe rules". Stumbled across the 46 min fan edit on youtube yesterday, for a goof I decided to watch it. It was really an eye opener. Seeing that edit really shows how the movie could have been made better. Granted the edit was somewhat of a trolljob to trigger people but it showed how much useless stuff just acted as filler. So what did I like about it? No Admiral Holdo, Rose, Canto Bight, Leia Marry Poppins, no poorly timed jokes( Poe prank calling Hux, removing tension etc), less of captain Phasma( that character just didn't work for me). Luke was also edited to be less of a failure and Rey was pictured in a better way. She only fights one guard in the throne room which makes more sense since she has only known about the force less then 2 weeks, TFA being 1 week long timewise and TLJ 3 days or so). The changes I liked could be interpreted I guess by some lunatics like I dislike women in Star Wars. Not at all. It was just that The Last Jedi have so many poorly written female characters. Also it has so much useless filler that when cut gives a more streamlined focused movie. For example lots of time in the beginning is used to depict how the pilot that destroys the Dreadnaught struggles with opening a hatch to drop bombs. The whole thing didn't work for me. Better would have been to use a character we know from before in her place so we are emotionally invested. This creates more tension. Also it was so stupid with how the ships were designed. Bombs in space opening a hatch into the ship. How slow fragile and nonsensical the ships were brought me somewhat out of the movie. In short I would really advice people to check out the 46 min youtube edit. Like I wrote it actually shows how much useless stuff could be cut while still giving a pretty coherent story. Nvm the troll name "defeminized fan edit" or whatever. View all replies >
