Where are the old people?

I notice a lack of middle aged and old people in the city . Do they go to carousel at the age of 40?

Yes, they go to carousel when their hand jewel turns red. Unless they run. Then the Sandmen come for them.

Yeah that was one thought I had but I watched the 1980 NBC miniseries last nite and it explains it there. They keep taking the drugs which keeps them young looking until they get into their 80s and the body stops working and they die basically. The miniseries is on YouTube.

If I remember right in the book, they are euthanized at 60 in a hospital setting.

They don't visibly age, then they are euthanised or die of the drugs they're taking once they reach a certain age.
