Before she starts to get those weird visions and act crazy, she still behaves very strange...
What was with her obsession about the 60s?
Why does she dresses so weird?
Why doesn't she have any friends?
Why does she stops the cab and gets out from it quickly and wait until it's gone?
Why does she act so weird in the club or at the dorm party, when interacting with the other girls and guys?
Why does she leave the dorm and rents a room to live alone with that creepy old lady?

She is psychic and sees her deceased mother regularly. Because of that she acts strangely and thus is an outcast.

That explains most of it.

She senses the cabby has "plans" for her and hides in the store to avoid him. He did wait for her out there, so she may've correctly perceived his vibes.

She doesn't see the landlady as creepy at first because the lady hides the creepiness and Ellie enjoys her 60s vibe and that of the house.

One clue we got, BTW, as to the lady's true nature was telling Ellie that at night she had to "plug the holes because the smell rises at night."

There’s nothing “wrong” with being quiet, thoughtful and introverted.
You sound like you’d be one of the four girls in her dorm.
