Venable's Accent

So, apparently these people were here pre-Civil War, and they all have some sort of Eastern European accents? But then in his big speech when he kills the white dude near the middle, he slips (on purpose?) into some sort of weird Brooklyn accent? What was I supposed to get out of that?

reply

That this film is low budget

Budget or not, that dude is generally a very good actor. Just confused on his (or the director’s?) motivations for the accent. Was it on purpose?

Good point. I didn't really think of it while watching.

I was more concerned about what a nice fresh haircut and nicely trimmed beard he had. A real nice civilized look. Like he had a day job in a city somewhere.

Also, now that you're making me think about it, the way he talks is not consistent with someone who lived there all his life. He has a very nice elocution, with a european accent, in addition to speaking their own dialect. He sounds educated while the movie seems to want us to believe he's been full time on the mountain.

My explanation would be that he got there when he was a young man, probably the same way Darius and Jen did. Coming from Brooklyn, he saw this as an opportunity to reinvent himself and decided he was like an european conqueror, thus changing his accent to fit his fantasy. In moments of rage or loss of control, that could indeed slip.

That does not explain the nice hair cut and well groomed beard though. Maybe they captured an hairdresser that had quality scissors and a clipper in her emergency kit...

It's not like they were unaware of the world. They would have scissors. They would know how to cut hair. Lol. People been cutting hair, and well for thousands of years.
