Billy Bob Thornton says meeting ZZ Top is like seeing Bugs Bunny in real life. LOL. I wouldn't know about that but I did see them in concert once.
This Documentary is a nice overview of ZZ Top up until the mid 80s and not a lot of detail after that. Very interesting movie if you're a big ZZ Top fan like me.
What was surprising to me was how little historical footage of the band there seemed to be, at least prior to achieving some fame. I thought they filled in a little too much with stock footage and those dumb cartoon scenes.
There's probably not much to say about the band after the mid-80s. They peaked as a pop trend in '83 and it was all coasting and decline from there for anyone who wasn't a hard core fan.
I mean, at the end of the day they were really a 1970s hard rock product that managed to get lucky with a combination of pop rock radio styling and being in the right place at the right time for a huge MTV hit. I'd say without that MTV video to drive the radio hit, they'd have been forgotten completely by the mid-1980s.
That being said, as a documentary about the band it's pretty good overall. I really liked the "studio" scenes where the band actually plays live for the documentary, that's not something you see much, and there's a lot of interview time with the band.
i was interested enough to watch it earlier this week & enjoyed it, being a texan & all. saw em at Reunion arena in Dallas & in Austin at the Frank Erwin center, both killer shows
