One of the more underrated "thinker" movies...

On my list of Top 50 movies since the year 2000, I put it #41 on my list...much higher than most I assume! Short on action/CGI/budget and whatnot, it makes up for it by being a thinking person's movie...a movie that I'm always wondering "Hmmm...what's that little part about?". Also the wintry weather and a nice long car ride...it's just got a great cozy feel to it. If you haven't seen it...Grab a warm sweater, a cup of Java, get a little MJ going...and sit back and enjoy!

I looked through your list and whilst there are some good films on there - and I agree with the placement of There Will Be Blood above No country For Old Men (although I'd have it at number 1) - it seems to be missing Rocky Balboa, which should be on a top 50 list. Certainly ahead of The Wrestler and Gangs Of New York, which was a joke.

Well...while I disagree about Rocky Balboa...it just didn't "catch me" if you know what I mean...I will say The Wrestler and (especially) Gangs of New York have fallen drastically on the list the past few years, to the point where I've thought about eliminating them from the Top 50 altogether. Maybe your comments will sway me even further to do so! :)

I think my problem may have been that I watched Gangs Of New York after watching There Will Be Blood.

Daniel Day Lewis was amazing in that film, in fact everything is amazing in that film. For me, it's the best film of the last 20+ years. But Gangs Of New York, it was like watching a cartoon in comparison, even DDL...

Your post has reminded me that I do need to check out this film as well. Although, that makes me think of another film you're probably missing - Synecdoche, NY. Have you seen that? That's a brutal film for me but probably well within a top 50.

Actually I started watching that recently, got interrupted, then it was taken off Amazon Prime where I was watching it by the time I returned to it. So I haven't gotten back to it yet. Probably only seen the first 20 minutes...but what I seen of it I liked. I remember the mom getting a call and saying "I'm just wiping Olive's ass"...I laughed pretty hard at that. It's definitely something I'll have to finish.

It's probably his best film I think. Very much in the typical weird Kaufman style but it has real substance and is pretty dark once you realise it's (largely) about life zipping away from you as you get older.

One of those films which stays with you for days after you've finished watching it.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was excellent in it as well...

Well I watched it today...great movie! Thanks for the reminder. I was a bit confused about a few things...like how could a house stay on fire for decades? I'm sure that was an allegory to something or another. Not sure if I'll add it to my Top 50 but it's close and I just might. Thanks again!

People like simple, straightforward movies. That's why they lash out when something is more abstract.

I'm a fan of Kaufman, so I liked this.

Watching now, it's painful to watch.
