I believe that, V-Tech & Duke lacrosse notwithstanding, false rape reports are relatively rare. But the common assertion that robbery or mugging victims are never doubted is just absurd. Ask any insurance investigator whether or not robbery or burglary claims are faked. & muggings, I've been given to understand, are sometimes seen, absent corroborating evidence, as a symptom of gambling addiction.

There's big incentives for them: they're very effective to hurt somebody socially and economically, and it prevents the social loss of status for being labeled as 'slut'. It has zero consequences and no risk involved, trials for fake rape accusations are extremely rare.
At least, traditionally there was a loss of status for having been raped. However, without that, it's logical that they're become far more common.
It's not always about doubt. They need evidence and information to be able to convict.
