Couldn't they cast a less ugly elderly actor to play Laurie

There are tons of older women actors out there who are attractive. Instead of casting any of these women they cast a fat diabetic.

Just to cite a few examples:
Kim Basinger.
Michelle Pfeiffer.
Uma Thurman.

All of these actors, on top of being great actors, are good looking for their age. Furthermore, they fit the face type.

I absolutely did not buy Laurie having sex with the assistant federal agent in the third episode. She simply does not have sex appeal.

Uhm... what?? Jean Smart was always a beautiful woman, and looks great for her age.

Her face is melting! Look at her jawls. Her body is girthy and fat.

Compare her to Uma Thurman in The House that Jack Built or Michelle Pfeiffer in Maleficient 2, there is no comparison. Uma Thurman and Michelle Pfeiffer are actually hot. They also show observable signs of aging, a required feature for this role.

While I didn't see Kim Basinger in her recent movies (Fifty Shades for instance), she looked very good in The Door in the Floor(2004) in which she played an older lover.

Is something wrong with your mathematical ability or something?.. 🙄

Uma Thurman is friggin 20 years younger! Jean Smart is pushing 70!

And I think Uma looks absolutely horrible for someone who isn't even 50 yet. And I am sure she'd be very flattered to be called an "elderly actor", ha.

Who cares about age? In film all that matters is the appearance and the appearance of age. Uma Thurman looking old is a boon from the perspective of the characterization requirements.

In any case, since you obviously can't comprehend - the reason her FBI underling is attracted to her is not purely physical, but because he is so impressed by her.

There isn't any what the kids call "chemistry" there.

What I notice when people say that about actors is that they are projecting their own ideas of attractiveness onto what the actors (in their opinion) should be feeling. After 50 Shades of Gray people were saying that there is no chemistry between Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, no doubt because in their opinion he is way hotter than she is. In The Walking Dead people were saying that about Rick and Michonne, and I personally thought that he shuddered every time he had to kiss her, but then I realize that there is no way for us to know how Andy Lincoln actually felt. For all we know, he is into that type of look - it's not like he is gonna tell the public either way.

I am sure I could come up with many more examples if I think about it, but the fact remains, you don't know what their actual chemistry is like, and besides, it's not like the actors had to sleep with each other in reality.

Ofcourse people are "projecting their own ideas of attractiveness" there is always a level of subjectveness in the pereption of aesthetics. But, there is also some intersubjective similarities in perception based on genetics. A common one cited all the time is: symmetrical faces look better than non-symmetric ones, possibly due to genes being better at producing good symmetry and healthy organs.

There is clearly some intersubjective similarities in perception otherwise we would see fat or facially scarred fashion models.

‘Scuse me: is “intersubjective” the same as “objective”? I’m guessing it is. I’m also guessing it’s a word you coined. Why would you create a 5-syllable word to replace a 3-syllable word? For the same reason why you don’t understand that Jean Smart is class from head to toe and can ACT?

No, a collection of agreeing subjective opinions cannot make that opinion objective. Objective is independent of subjective notions. I can't think of an example.

You really can't see beyond your own nose, can you? If you don't find someone attractive, why do you assume that everyone else wouldn't? Or why specifically the actor they are paired with shouldn't? And especially someone like Jean Smart who was always a striking woman?
