Who attacked the camp at the beginning and killed the boy's mother? Was it the Boors? Was that the Transvaal?

It was a Boer sniper.

I can't remember the date for the opening, was it 1892? That would make it part of the second Boer War. It did say the location was The Sudan.

That makes more sense, given Conrad is supposed to be five when he sees his mother die, but not yet old enough to enlist without his father's consent at the beginning of the war in 1914.
