So this is sort of like a "Big Lebowski" for tv...

...but lamer.

Watching the premiere, I kept expecting the plot to head somewhere, but no luck. I might watch the second episode, but something of substance better happen or I'm done.

It tries too hard to be "The Big Lebowski", and I think that's what sold AMC on it as Fx is having great success with Noah Hawley's take on the Coen Bros "universe". They figure that there's a big enough audience that's into meta-story telling that draws from established sources.

I don't see it that way. If I recall Lebowski was far more resourceful and resilient. These are characters who are recovering from multiple tragedies or still laboring under ongoing ones and not all that good at negotiating life challenges. I like the way that even though they have their own troubles they are genuinely concerned for one another and try to give help to the extent that they can, most of them at least. Watched all three of the first episodes now and surreal things are starting to happen such as visions and visible auras. I think it will end up being quite a surrealistic tale. Still has our interest.

I did follow through on watching the second episode...and nothing happened to hold my interest. Perhaps I might have thought more positively of this if I had waited for all the episodes to air and then binge-watched it, but regardless, I'm done with it. There's other stuff to watch. Hope you enjoy it.

So far they have had to spend a lot of time introducing the characters, but as soon as episode 3, interesting developments are coming.

Thanks for saying this. I was just about to bail.

Sure, am still with it, by the way. And wondering if Paul Giamatti -- who is a producer -- will ever show up on it. :)

reply

So how would you rate it from 1-10?

Yeah, it would be cool if PG made an appearance. I will say that even though the first 2 episodes were a little meh, I thought Wyatt Russell did a nice job as Dud.

By the end I gave it a 6. I was able to watch it and was curious to see what would happen, but didn't get that much laughter or meaning from it. It seemed that in the last five episodes with Paul Giamatti also acting in it they seemed to hit their stride and it was a lot more funny and entertaining. Those episodes are probably 8s.
