I'm glad I didn't look up the IMDB rating

before I saw this. I liked it, don't really understand the low rating.

Visually and stylistically it was very impressive. I don't think they did a good job of telling the story though, you could have moved around the order of most of the scenes and it would barely make a difference.

5.8/10 is actually a decent rating for a horror movie. I like most horror movies with ratings around that.

5.8 is honestly a very decent horror movie score on imdb.

You have to shift the scale when dealing with ratings of horror movies.

Regular movie: 7.0+ likely to be good. 8.0+ is exceptional.
Horror: 6.0+ likely to be good. 7.0+ is exceptional.

With horror I'll give anything 5.5+ a chance.

I think it's because of the marketing. It's supposed to be a horror, but it's not really. Although it has some horror elements, it's more an exploration of trauma and it's effects. The director said it's a character study at its core.

People probably expected Anabelle or The boy, and instead got a subtle and unsettling descent into madness caused by deep trauma.

Still, a low rating.
