In such a future, Canada would be devoured like trout by a Grizzly....

One of the most hilarious aspects for me is that Canada is this wonderful safe haven for refugees and the fanatical Gilead people or militia groups tied to them would not have invaded or at least forced Canada into an agreement not to take this people, much less allowing them to serve as a base of operations for a resistance and media propaganda campaigns against them.

Same goes for Mexico, if America had transformed and could no longer offer aid or trade, Mexico would be completely economically ruined and a Mad Max society with the cartels in charge, not being wooed for life or death trade deals. Heh.

You underestimate Canada's allies.

That's the whole point. In such a future described, there would be no help for anyone. It would be anarchy. Every man for himself. Canada like Mexico is utterly dependent on the USA for trade. All of a sudden the only thing the US to offer is handmaid's? It makes no sense.

reply

I don't think it's the only thing but the most valuable thing they have. Most of America has been destroyed I believe. Which means no goods. Mexico wanted handmaids to repopulate the area. When most of the population is dying out and most people are sterile, don't you think a way to repopulate is pretty important?

It's getting harder to grow food in Gilead, that's what they are trying to do in the colonies. Before they can restart crops in an area, they have to remove a layer of topsoil because it is toxic. So far, it doesn't look like that plan is working out very well, and that's why they are becoming increasingly dependent on other countries for food.

Gilead isn't the USA any more. From what I remember (it's been like 25 years since reading the book) exiled members of the US government have a consulate in Little America and we don't really know how much of the US military is in exile as well. If the majority of the military are either in Alaska or Canada along with their weapons, that could be a good reason why Gilead hasn't attacked. Plus like Tydeway said, Canada is part of the British Commonwealth of Nations, and would still have allies.

Canada would be bursting at the seams with all the refugees too. Yet it seems like business as usual and everyone is housed and well-fed. In reality it would be anarchy.
