The jar of pickles has become a running gag between Alara and Captain Mercer that started in the pilot episode. He couldn't get a vault open, and as Alara is stronger than a human, he asked her if she could "open this jar of pickles" for him, much as a weaker human asks a stronger human to literally open a jar of pickles. There have been other similar incidents in the series between Ed and Alara. Here's a compilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VIWdRg__PM

Grateful for explaining this, I was confused too.

Glad I could help.

I thought it was odd to not reference that line in the episode if it's going to be a key component of the wrapup. First time viewers were surely scratching their heads.

I'm glad they didn't. The modern hand holding in tv is tiresome.

I think it's weird, how the 'superstrong girl'

..(with a flimsy and implausible explanation for her strength - also, her jumping like that against the door would not affect the door that heavy in any way, no matter how 'strong' she is, so they clearly don't think what the physics look like in this show - when she breaks a table, the table LOOKS like anyone could break it, when she crushes some 'superstrong box', it LOOKS like it's just some weak tinfoil paper, etc. - they could use CGI to at least make things she breaks LOOK massive/heavy, but no - it's like in The Matrix, when the agent punches through a clearly thin, weak, cardboard-like 'brick wall' - they could've made the bricks LOOK massive and heavy)..

..can easily know what 'pickles' are, but does NOT know what money is.
