Solid film - 6.5 /10

The good:

1). Sylvester Stallone is still awesome! He was charismatic and likeable. He was definitely the highlight of the film.

2). The action scenes were great. I love the ending at the fire-torn building

3). The twist really worked out and conveyed a message about good / evil. The scene where Stallone say, “You keep calling me the good guy. I’m the bad guy!” was badass

The bad:

1). Whereas Stallone was incredible, the little boy was not. The little boy was not a good actor. His facial expressions and line-delivery were poor.

2). The little boy’s role also seemed forced: the scenes where the hardened villain gets so enamored with this little boy were cringe. Why would a serious criminal want to mingle with a random 10-year-old boy who still lives with his mother?

3). Speaking of the villain: I’m still not sure about his motivations. Why exactly was he so intrigued by Nemesis? I understand the movie would have went 2 hours if they tried to flesh him out more, but they could have went another direction for the villain. Related to this point- the scene where he cries because the female criminal got killed didn’t have the desired effect because we don’t know much about their relationship

4). Why in the world would they cast Rico from Hannah Montana as this street thug? Who would be intimidated by him?

5). The movie should ditched the kiddy characters and kiddy scenes. They should have gone straight for a gritty, mature superhero film in the vein of Watchmen or The Boys

Why would i want it to be like The Boys. A show where Super Powered beings pretend to be Superhero. But there really supervillains. This is almost the opposite of that. At least the Watchman tried to have some more ambiguity. I don't have a problem with the kid.

When I said “like the Boys or Watchmen,” I meant more in the sense that those films (both in their presentation and messages) are designed for adults, not kids

I think 6.5 is about right. It reminded me a lot of Unbreakable which while a technically better film I found Samaritan much more enjoyable and with more action. I didn't mind the kid I can't see a much older character working, and I haven't watched Hannah Montana so thought the villain was ok too. Yes they could have put fleshed out the motivations, but then it'd be a longer film and probably become a snoozefest. I think the film helped by it's relatively short run time.

A kid does not make it a kids film, look at Deadpool 2, and Samaritan is a little bloody and painful in places, certainly compared to MCU.
