All the luxury and opulence

Just keep reminding yourself this is the same period during which the stories of Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell were published. Children worked in factories, people starved, got typhus, etc.

Sure, but you seem to miss that this show is about Queen Victoria.
It is not like she would have seen much of what the lives of the working class were like.
Even so, there were mentions of their situation here and there.
Albert had even read Charles Dickens and did what he could to help the poor.

reply

Heh, no I did not miss that. There’s no reason for you to criticize me and suggest that I am stupid or ridiculous.

The indifferent attitude of the politicians in the first two series, esp Melbourne, is disgusting. I imagine that was Goodwin’s point in including them. It’s easy for our eyes to feast on all the elegance and opulence, but I found it very important to keep reminding myself of conditions of the poor, a la Dickens and Gaskell, and explore the contrast.

You seem like a miserable person.

Make snap judgements much?

I just really enjoy history and context. Rewatching this series binge-style is a very different experience from waiting a week between eps. It’s easy to get caught up in the “pretty.”
