Emily Blunt did a wonderful job portraying Mary Poppins; however, she had the disadvantage of having to follow the great Julie Andrews. Blunt is a gifted actress and an attractive, charismatic performer. Julie Andrews is a phenomenon of prodigious talent with one of the great voices of the twentieth century. It took a lot of courage for Blunt to put herself forth to be compared to Andrews, and her result was splendid. Andrews defined the character and will never be surpassed, but Blunt's film succeeds at being a memorable companion to the original, largely owing to her performance.

Agreed. But then again: Andrews's performance was so iconic that it was always going to be a losing battle. You can't top what was already perfect.
