everyone got up clapping, yelling and whistling as the credits rolled. Even saw a few men high 5 each other...it's clear folks, Shyamalan is back. Start remembering how to pronounce his name again because we could soon see him at the oscars.
this is a HIT! What more do you want? Blood? This guy came through huge and is now back on the map.
Maybe it's me and the experience I had at the theater. It reminded me a little of seeing the first Rocky back in the day as a kid...when everyone was in the lobby shadow boxing and holding up their hands so strangers could box them.
I've seen it 2 times in theaters, first screening was sold out, and the second was an imax and was about 90% filled - both times everyone reacted really well to the film, and seemed to really enjoy it even if they didn't understand the ending - I'd agree that Shyamalan is back !
Can't wait to see what he has in store for the future...
I liked this movie a lot but I don't get what purpose clapping serves unless people involved in the movie were there. And high fiving each other over a movie is extremely silly.
You know what? You're right, my negativity toward people who clap at the end of a movie wasn't necessary. Even if it does annoy me that's my problem and they're not doing anything wrong. I'm sorry for adding more negativity to a place that doesn't need any more than it already has. Especially when we both like this movie and don't need to be divided based on something like how we express our enjoyment of a movie.
I know it's hard to tell but this isn't sarcasm, I mean what I said. So clap away. :)

I must say that's quite a reversal, Grither, and I am impressed, heartened, and even inspired by your humility and grace.
A person, after being attacked on the internet, responds with a reasoned and gracious reply thus squashing a potentially unpleasant, unnecessary, and utterly futile argument--who'd a thunk it?
I congratulate you.
And what's more I thank you--for restoring my faith in public decency. You truly have made my day! YOU, are my new hero/heroine.

Thanks, that means a lot. :) I was thinking about what I wrote after I did and I realized that I was being one of those people I can't stand who make the internet a less enjoyable place and I felt bad about it. I did start it though, so I can't really take the high road. I was only undoing the negativity I had started.
But I'm glad you liked it, and I hope others do what I did. We have way too many meaningless arguments online and it makes us worse people. I'm sorry I contributed to that.
I just wish I could say I'd never do it again. I'll try though.
Old post to be replying to, but can't help myself as I relate to you some. I'm a pretty reserved guy, having been raised by some pretty reserved people and I can understand seeing some public displays as uncouth, even annoying sometimes.
Its a hard habit to break...especially because, at least for me, I'm not really capable of expressing the same kind of enthusiastic outward sentiment like that, you know? My parents were "professionals"...and I guess it was kind of their identity. They were calculating people...very poised, who were often judgmental of any display of boisterousness. Someone gets a little too loud and it'd be pointed out how it was "attention seeking" behavior or something...notice how much attention they're drawing to themselves?? God forbid it was just someone having a good time!
Anyway, sometimes that kind of conditioning sticks with you, and whether or not its the case with you, its interesting to see the same kind of knee-jerk reaction in someone else. Although maybe its just because you didn't like the movie, annnnd if so....never mind!
People were just expressing their joy and excitement for a film they've been waiting for for 17 years. I personally was very pumped and hyped when I saw the reveal at the end.

Id argue that Shyamalan's next film is The film that people have been waiting 17 years to see.
while Split is clearly a sequel to Unbreakable, I think The next film that heavily features both David Dunn and Kevin Is the film people have been waiting 17 years to see...
In fact, Spilt ONLY made the film to come better...
everyone wanted An Unbreakable Sequel....
But Now where getting A Unbreakable Sequel, after we already got A film In Split that Masterfully Set up the Origin and Birth of Kevin/"The Horde".
Basically IMO it couldn't get better....Split perfectly told The Origin Of David Dunn's "Physical Match"....David Dunn Is A Superhero, Mr. Glass Is his arch Nemeses, He will always be plotting against him, By Now, Dunn has a Physical Threat, A Villain that can match him in Strength.
again this is the genius of SPLIT.....Hypothetically lets say back in 2004 Unbreakable 2 came out and Kevin/The Horde was the villain, I'm sure it would have been great....But Not nearly as Great as It will be now, after getting a entire film that explains The Origin and creation of Kevin/The Horde...
If we now get a 3rd film that completes The Unbreakable/Split Trilogy...Its going to be even better than if we got a unbreakable sequel back in 2004.
We now had 1 Film dedicated to The creation and Origin of Our Hero(David Dunn-Unbreakable) and One film dedicated to the creation and Origin to our Villain(Kevin/The Horde-Split)...now we will hopefully get the Ultimate Payoff with A 3rd film featuring both .
I completely get what your saying when you say "People were just expressing their joy and excitement for a film they've been waiting for for 17 years"....
we've all wanted an Unbreakable sequel, and Split was just that...But I just think Shyamalan's next film Is Truly what we've been waiting for...
Never understood why people clap at the end of a movie. It's quite silly. It's not a play, where the actors and production team can hear and appreciate your applause. I always smirk to myself when people clap at the end of the movie because they're doing it for nothing. It's pretty funny.
I don't "worry" about the matter and never dwelled on it much until I read this post. I'm merely pointing out how silly it is. If you want to clap for someone who isn't there to appreciate it, by all means, go ahead...
Ya think? Look at the awful shills the studio has paid to promote this film. I haven't met a soul who thought this film was worth clapping for. They ALL pull this stunt. They'd say people clapped after Dumb and Dumber to sucker people into seeing this.
Really and truly, if you're going to shill, at least be smart about it. Some of the mistakes these idiots make are harassing posters who didn't like the movie, making up blatant lies, coming up with 1,000 random facts no regular poster should have off-hand and cheerleading movies by starting random threads praising how great the movie is.
It's just a pathetic thing to do because it enrages people who know they are lying and want to fight back. I mean, yes, it is their opinion, but when it sounds downright outlandish and phony, I can't sit by idly and put up with it.
I haven't met a soul who thought this film was worth clapping for.
Yes you have, you just automatically accuse them of being shills because they have a different opinion than you. Paranoia is a pretty powerful thing.

It was a good reaction in my screening too. People laughed appropriately, people were audibly scared at moments, very little fidgeting and there was actually a couple of tears.
Just before the 'reveal' there's a certain audible hint in the scene before, I heard a few whispers of "no way....", "Oh my God". When the reveal actually happened it was clear a lot of people were really excited and pumped up. There was quite a few people frantically explaining to their friends on the way out. I had a long pumped up, overly excited conversation with the girl at the popcorn stand after about it. That end has clearly resonated highly with Shyamalan fans.
