What did Colin Trevorrow do to deserve this franchise?

How did a mediocre talent like this guy, with one ok indie movie under his belt, get control of the Jurassic Park franchise (he wrote / directed Jurassic World and wrote Fallen Kingdom)?

His other credits include being kicked off Star Wars and directing the critical reviled The Book of Henry.

Oddly, for some people, making one good indie movie is all it takes for them to suddenly be considered ready to take on a behemoth franchise. I never would have guessed he would have created characters this unbearably stupid though. He showed a whole new side of himself with these movies.

Have a short review of this movie if anyone is interested. If you feel there is something I could be doing better, I would definitely love to hear it. Review here - https://youtu.be/h6L_Jlj8OzM

The successful indie film gets him the meeting, and his performance in the meeting gets him the Jurassic Park gig. It also helps that he's a relatively unseasoned director, so the low salary weighs in his favor.

Correct.

Universal has been wanting to make another sequel to Jurassic Park since 2010. However, just like the 3rd movie they couldn't come up with a good story to progress forward. Apparently, Colin's idea for Jurassic World sold Universal. And Safety not Guaranteed sold Speilberg that he could make a competent blockbuster under his watchful eye. Speilberg was present for many meetings on the development.

Yes, Spielberg's approval was instrumental in Trevorrow securing the gig.
