So many questions! (SPOILERS)

What is the year you think the ended up in when they were taken aboard the spaceship?

I would estimate 32019 AD, but really I have no idea.

It seems with the rate it was switching from night and day in the cave, especially since it accelerated the deeper in they got, that it would have to be many thousands of years right?

Just imagining time traveling like that is mind boggling.

Did anyone think the human looked evolved? I know he spoke weird, but did anything look off to you? I certainly thought he looked different, he was at least 8 feet tall if I recall, which is interesting because I thought humans would evolve smaller over many millennia.

What do you think ultimately becomes of the 21st Century humans? I hate to be cynical but wouldn't they be treated like zoo animals? I can't imagine people from the Ice Age trying to function today would have any success, so what about a human from today going into the far our future?

It was not switching from night and day, but from season to season. It was the solstices that we saw each time. I have no idea what year it was... but it probably wasn't less than what you are guessing.

Yes, I do think the human looked evolved and exactly how I always thought they'd evolve. I don't know why you think humans would get smaller as they consistently kept getting taller and bigger throughout history. Basically through the abundance of food (agriculture, breeding and then research science helped tremendously), that keep on feeding infants with sufficient and better nutrients for optimal growth and development. I don't see this tendency reversing.. except if, for whatever reason, we end up being unable to provide the species with the optimal abundance of food and essential nutrients.

When you talk about the 21st century humans.. you mean the survivors at the end of the movie? If so, I think they were probably allowed to live among the rest of the more evolved humans but under supervision, of course. When the girl (can't recall which one) says, smiling to Furby, that they are pretty popular, it suggests that they are the object of curiosity and probably study too but in "cool and relaxed" way. That's how I see it at least.

You speak about people from the Ice Age having trouble to function today. That's true. The 21st century humans will probably have a lot to learn in order to function on Mars with the more evolved humans. But just as it may be possible (I guess) to communicate with cave men through signs and patience, it will probably be the same here. Maybe even a little easier since 21st century humans can easily learn and express languages verbally.

The idea that humans will become smaller and weaker is due to the fact we are becoming less muscular and more sedentary.
Kinda related to the idea that the "Grey" aliens we are familiar with are just humans 100,000 years evolved.

reply

Hm... ok I get the idea. I'm not too sure about it though. Sedentary people don't tend to get smaller. Au contraire. But maybe one day we'll get to one point where the permanent sedentary lifestyle will make us reach a plateau and we'll then start shrinking. We'll just have to wait and see I guess (if we still exist at that point).

reply

Sedentary people lose muscle mass. I wasn't referring to people that overeat. And I would think in 100,000 years if humans even exist that obesity would no longer exist.

But then again if we can genetically mutate ourselves to the point of having perfect bodies I can definitely plenty of men choosing to be as tall as possible (I would say they are 8-9 feet tall in this movie) and as built as possible.

reply

yeah i guess we will at some point in the (near) future begin to genetically modify ourselves and gain "superbodies" with incredible speed and strenght. itll probably start in sports and then become available to the masses. I kinda doubt one would want to become extremly tall though, since it just eats more space and energy.

I was interested in some of the same things. I re-watched some of the scenes and saw that the light shifts every 3 secs in the cave.

So if 3 secs ~ 1 year, and if they were there for 18 hours, about

(18 x 60 x 60) = 64,800/3 = 21,600 years would've elapsed, which means they would be in 23,617 AD! (assuming they entered the cave in 2017)
