There's only so much mayhem that can involve the whole family. Last year's cliffhanger had the entire family attacked, including Kayce, but if they went that way again, they would be repeating themselves.
I guess they're trying to evolve the NAs into something more than one dimensional foes in this show who only want John's land, and I suppose Kayce is the most obvious white dude to be open about the NA's mystical beliefs.
One thing they can't have him doing is running for Governor. That one was run up the flagpole early in the season during that meeting with the various cattle barons. Apparently someone called the studio and explained to them how that would never work.
