Uneven tone but interesting storylines being set up.

It seems it cannot decide if it's a DALLAS styled soap melodrama or something more thoughtful. Still, there are subplots I'm interested in. Whether it be the tribal chief's plan with the governor; the one son's biracial family; or just watching Kelly Reilly eat every man in sight then spit their bones out. She's the best thing thus far aside from the cinematography.

The best thing for me is the scenery, and, as with you, some of the subplots interest me, so I plan to keep watching. However, I will be recording it so I can fast forward through the many, many, many commercials!

reply

Many many many commercials?

Weird you say that. The premiere was presented with limited commercial breaks.

The first commercials didn't even roll in until after half an hour from the beginning.

reply

That's because it was the premiere, I think! I have, in the past, watched other series which have done the same for the first episode. I will be pleasantly surprised if the remaining ones are as commercial free as the first was.

I enjoyed it. This was easily my most anticipated show of all of 2018 (at least so far) and I made a point even to put an entry on my calendar so that I didn't miss it. 7 PM and I was on the couch and ready to go.

My biggest complaint is a technical one: Some of the dialogue was hard to hear. My dad said the same. It's like the characters are just mumbling and the words get lost in the music. I blame the sound mix and it's a real problem.

But other than that, I thought it was a cool show with an interesting premise, a great cast and some beautiful cinematography. I was surprised to see that it only has a 50% critics' score on RT. 85% audience score though.

reply

I just looked at the RT score and was surprised to see such a disparity between critics and audiences.

As of right now, the critics' score is 47% (average rating: 5.76/10) and the audience score is 83% (average rating: 8.4/10).

That's kind of crazy. I'm quite surprised to see the critics' score so low. This show's a lot better than those scores would have you believe.

Also, why the hell is this board so dead? Yellowstone was easily my most anticipated show of the year. Super hyped. So where is everybody?

reply

Good question actually. I guess people don't care about Kevin Costner like they used to.

reply

It's funny you say that. Apparently it did quite well ratings-wise, more than doubling the numbers of the Waco premiere.

When I told my dad about this, he immediately was like, "Not surprising. It has Kevin Costner."

But I agree with you that Kevin is not the star he once was. I can't remember the last film where he was the lead that was a genuine hit.

reply

At times it seems they're trying to see how many times the f-bomb can be dropped in an hour.

I'm interested to see where these plot lines are going. Will there be a man to stand up to Kelly Reilly?? She can't even finish a meal with her Dad and brother!! In season 2 episode 2 she definitely had a low opinion of realtors. She got a piece of property that wasn't even for sale!!

reply

I love the ranch setting and the modern cowboy lifestyle. I am not sure if I would have bothered with it if it were set in the suburbs or city with a similar concept of a wealthy established family fighting the world for their survival.
