Need to spend some of that heist loot on better shields and weapons on the ship...

Seems like every encounter they lose shields and/or weapons in first or second salvo from another ship. Doesn't seem like the most dangerous merc crew in the universe should be cruising around with weak ass shields and cannons.

Indeed.

The weirdest part is how powerful they seem to think the ship is. They have this devastating reputation and people are terrified of them, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Ultimately, the show seemed to play fast and loose with how much damage the ship could absorb. Sometimes it seemed like they could fight it out, other times it seemed like they were a paper tiger.

Inconsistencies like that bug me because it harms the tension in the show. How do the showrunners expect to maintain tension if the ship can take plot-convenient amounts of stress?

reply

Its the sci-fi way

The engines cannae take anymore cap'n!
Shields down to 20% captain!
Then random consoles on the flight deck will start exploding , becasue they dont have fuses and circuit breakers in the future

Maybe people were terrified of the crew , not the ship itself

It's some sci-fi, but not all. I've often compared the attack on the Death Star in Star Wars to the attack on the Dreadnought in Star Wars VIII, highlighting that the damage an x-wing or TIE fighter can take is fairly consistent (and almost nil) whereas in VIII, the bombers seem to be able to last for random amounts of time as the plot allows. To my recollection, Firefly did a good job of this, too. Yes, Star Trek was inconsistent. Some movies manage it and others don't. It bugs me in Star Trek, too.

The console explosions are fun, aren't they?

Good point. It's possible that the Raza wasn't the problem, but the Raza's crew were.

I do enjoy Dark Matter a lot, for what it's worth, but it does have the inconsistency in damage.

reply

Yeah it was the best sci fi around in a fair while.
real shame its over

I loved it, too. To me it was the closest thing I've seen to Firefly. There's Firefly, this, and Cowboy Bebop

reply

Firefly FTW yo!

I'm lucky enough not have seen cowboy Bebop yet so have that to come.
I have trouble getting into animated stuff , but i guess i'll get into into it once ive dived in.

Cowboy Bebop was my unofficial Firefly companion piece (companion, not Companion...) for a long time. I think you'll dig it since you like Dark Matter and Firefly. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing, but it's not a standard animation, either. It feels more like a series that happens to be animated, if that makes sense. I'd recommend it quite strongly.
