Winner of 3 Golden Globe awards

Tonight it was announced that West Side Story won best picture (musical or comedy), best actress (musical or comedy) and best supporting actress. Well deserved wins, in my opinion!

Sorry, but that doesn't mean anything to me, especially with the kind of movies that've been coming out nowadays, nor does it change the fact that I'm voting my pocketbook and not going to see it at all. The old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story is the real deal, imho.

reply

The original is excellent, but this version is great too and well worth seeing.

reply

The old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story is the real deal for me, and I have absolutely no intention of seeing Spielberg's reboot/remake of the film version of WSS. Thanks but no thanks on the new West Side Story for me.

You are cutting off your nose to spite your face (that is how the saying goes). Your loss.

reply

Oh, shut up! I don't feel that I'm doing any such thing.

reply

How is voting my pocketbook and refusing to see Spielberg's film version of West Side Story cutting off my own nose to spite my face when I'm not hurting anybody, even myself, by voting my pocketbook and not going to see it at all?

reply

You are missing out on a really good movie, so IMHO, you are hurting yourself and denying yourself to be thoroughly entertained. You are not alone by staying away and making your point that this classic movie did not need to be remade and the box office numbers evidently are very telling. That is just too bad because the movie is splendid.

I understand your need to "protest" this version because you love the original 1961 version so much. I really do get it. In fact, I was very upset when I heard that Spielberg was intending to remake this classic musical. After seeing the trailer, I got past that and I'm so glad I did. You may not want to hear this but I came out of the theater after seeing the new WSS for the first time and I was convinced what I had just seen was so much better than the 1961 original movie. The choreography and dancing in this new version is so splendid and so much more realistic, I was just enthralled by the beauty of it.

I do get that you are protesting the movie with your pocketbook. Wait until you can see it on cable TV and you will realize then that this movie would have been spectacular to see on the big screen.

Thanks but no thanks, luvthepros, but I've made my decision and will stick with it. I've seen enough of the reboot/remake of the film version of West Side Story (i. e 3 trailers, and some extra photographs, plus a TV program not that long ago that emphasized the comparisons of both the old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story and Spielberg's reboot/remake of the film version. The stuff i've read/heard about Ansel Elgort, and some of the trashy comments that Rachel Zegler made, some to get afew laughs from people, but did not succeed, also turned me off. I dom't consider myself missing out on anything.
I also listened to the soundtrack of the new West Side Story on youtube, just out of curiosity, and thought it sounded rather metallic, and flat in many places.

To be honest, I really and truly resent it when people try to get me to think like they do, and to do what they do. Having said all of the above, regardless what other people on here say or think, I'm sticking with the old, original 1961 film version of West Side Story.

No one likes the globes now

reply

Some of us still do.

reply

Agreed, those meaningful and relevant awards more than make up for the severe financial losses

reply

Do they just hand out awards to hardly anyone watched it shows these days? I mean I get it that they had to award it something because Spielberg did the directing which means it must be an automatic nomination or win.

reply

Awards have never meant much, and these days they're mostly in recognition of wokeness, and so are meaningless. And besides,

"Best __________ (musical or comedy)"

Were there even any other musicals?

reply

Yes, there were a handful of other musicals last year.
