Has everybody taken leave of their senses? This is terrible acting - Rylance walking from one building to the next with a smear on his face does not constitute good acting and the plot is so deep it has drowned. Great costumes and lighting but I think it's about time we recognized that the king is in his altogether - yes remember the Emperor's New Clothes.

I think they were going for the naturalistic approach. Unusual in a costume drama, but they were probably forced into it because the surprising main character is Cromwell, a rather dour, lawyerly type. If they had made everything very over the top, Cromwell would have been lost in the shadows.
