Barrel distortion makes straight lines look curved. In some scenes it's distracting. I think the photographic term for the focus issue is field curvature aberration.
Curious artistic choice to use lenses with such pronounced aberrations. These aberrations are more common in older lenses, so maybe that's what they are going for. To make it look like it was shot with crappy lenses in 1900.

Yes, you are correct. But in the VFX post-production process, lens distortion, film grain, chromatic aberration… etc are all removed - VFX elements are applied - then those lens effects are re-applied digitally (typically in Nuke) before sending to final color. Point being, there can be a lot of tinkering with lens effects that occur after the shoot - even in non-VFX shots.

shareat first i didnt like the out of focus edges, but it seems like as the episodes go on they are using this effect to warp & distort the entire picture for storytelling purposes, and then i grew into it
