Just watched THE final episode

What a fantastic send-off. Incredible performances throughout the entire 11 year/9 season run. British TV drama at its best. And the ending had me choked. 10/10

Pretty good, though some of the episodes/storylines were a bit wanting.
Probably more meaningful if one has seen the Morse series.

reply

Likely not. Morse was awkward with women, lonely, and more than a bit of an alcoholic. I haven't seen the Endeavour series, but I'm told it's either like two different men, or it kept people wondering what happened that made Morse the way he was.

reply

That's the only 'negative' I have, that I can't see Shaun Evans' character becoming John Thaw's (although the awkwardness with women and the alcoholism are definitely there). That said, I far prefer Evans' interpretation as a performance (and I'm generally a huge John Thaw fan) so it doesn't bother me.

I was only repeating what I'd seen others say, here. So hmmm. I may like it? I'll give it a try!

Saw my first episode. 👍🏻

Glad you enjoyed it. The most enjoyable feature for me is how Evans and Roger Allam play off each other. So good.

Does he have that essential loneliness that Thaw's Morse had? I noticed it especially in the episode in Australia. Lewis wanted to take a touristy boat ride, but Morse wanted to go to the opera. There was going to be a wait before seating for the opera, and you could tell that Morse hoped he could at least have come company for that time, but he couldn't ask Lewis to miss his boat. So he just stood there. I've never seen an actor just ache like that, wordlessly, and without moving.

reply

He does. As the show goes on he becomes more and more of a loner, not by choice but by realising that he doesn't have much in common with many people. The nearest thing he has to a friend is Thursday, his boss. It's a real slow-burn of a performance as things progress.

reply

I was thinking that would happen! My husband is as excited about this show as I am. We're getting backstories on a lot of, "Oh, THAT'S how Morse turned out that way!" It's a gem! Thank you for turning me on to it!

reply

I'm so glad you're enjoying it! Please post any further thoughts you have! If you're both Morse fans you'll notice all sorts of subtle callbacks (or technically 'call-forwards', I suppose!) as you go!

Incidentally, I don't know if you realise, but the woman who plays the newspaper reporter throughout is John Thaw's real daughter!

Ah! I love insider info! Thank you so much!

There is a website by a devoted fan called morseandlewisandendeavour which has reviews and photos and many details about the episodes of all 3 series. They even identify paintings on the wall and locations and the music used and you can add your comments or questions.

Cool! Thanks!
