Season 3, episode 2 discussion here.

To Recap:

We find out Nora got a tattoo of her children's names, covered it up with a tattoo of Wu-Tang Clan, and slammed her arm in her car door to cover up the tattoo, which is why she had a cast on her arm.

Scientists are illegally taking in participants to "cross over". 114 people have allowed themselves to be incinerated by these scientists with a neutron ray to reach what I'm going to call the "Other Side". Supposedly, on the "Other Side", is where the Departed have gone.

We find out that Christine, Lilly's mother, came back to seek custody of her child. Christine and Lilly, as well as another child of Christine's, are living in Kentucky, and Lilly is no longer named Lilly.

Erika Murphy is living outside of Jarden, somewhere, and seems to have her shit in order.

Nora has agreed to do cross over to reunite with her children, by meeting in Australia with $20,000 in cash. Kevin is tagging along with her, but has no idea what she's up to.

And, a group of woman in Australia seem to be sacrificing any Kevin they can find, due to a possible religion that is revolved around Kevin Garvey Jr., and it may have something to do with Kevin's dad, Kevin Garvey Sr.

And while all of this is happening, the episode revolves around Nora as she continues to try to deal with the loss of her children, as well as the loss of Lilly. I guess no love is to be had for her Departed husband, but okay.

Oh yeah, and Matt has begun having nosebleeds. I don't know if that will be significant or not.

Questions:
#1). Back in Season 1, didn't we find out Nora's husband cheated on her with a preschool teacher or was that another character?

#2). Was the final segment in Australia occurring in the present or another Flash-forward? Or is it possible that this final segment, as well as the previous ending segment in Episode 1 of this season, occurring in the "Other Side"? And if so, does that mean Kevin's dad and Nora crossed over to the "Other Side" as well?

#3). We have had two cameo appearances from previous cast members from Season 1 whose stories got wrapped up, in particular Michael Gaston as Dean, and Annie Q as Christine. Dean got shot in the head by Tommy in the last episode, and Christine is living in Kentucky with Lilly and an infant. Any one else thinking we will be seeing a return from the twins, Aimee, or Lucy Warburton?

reply

I think Tommy said Erika Murphy lived in Louisville KY. I think he said something to Nora, along the lines of "St. Louis MO is not close to Louisville KY." I'm not sure though. Thank you for writing this summary. I am utterly confused while I'm watching this, sometimes. I love this show. I think it's very well done, but many times, I'm not sure what he heck is happening. Please keep it up for the entire season!

reply

1.Yes, Noras husband cheated with their childrens pre-school teacher. Is that relevant to the latest episode?

2. The final segment in Australia was in the present. They show Kevin Garvey sr. talking to the women after they kidnap the other Kevin..so unless he is somehow not aging (which with The Leftovers could very well be a possibility) It would seem this is taking place in present day. The flash forward of "Sarah" (Nora) would be taking place in the future....as we see she has aged significantly

3. Possibly Lucy since she has a strong connection to Garvey sr. but the others is doubtful. Maybe Aimee in another dream sequence? She has no real reason to show up in Australia...as for the twins? I wish! They were great comic relief.

My guess is that Nora is going to go to Australia and be sucked into this science "experiment" and end up dying. Kevin will likely venture into the purgatory "hotel" to save her....

reply

How did Kevin square emerging from the dirt and living? He chalked that up to hallucination? So him and Nora, after everything they both have been through, are denying every illogical event or happening?

reply

Kevin, John, Michael and Matt are fully aware of Kevin's abilities. Kevin never told Nora or anyone else. If he did tell anyone else, they didn't buy his story, and think its BS. Kevin would just rather have no one hear about it, but John, Michael, Matt, and now supposedly Kevin Sr. are trying to exploit the hell out of Kevin.

reply

I was wondering what made Kevin jr. so special that he can't die? I re-watched both seasons before starting the 3rd season, and I noticed one moment that could be responsible for this.

When Wayne was dying on the toilet, he briefly met Kevin jr. and wanted to test if he's indeed God, so he told Kevin jr. to make a wish. We don't know what Kevin jr. wished for, but Wayne told him "your wish is granted". Anyway, that's when strange occurrences started to happen to Kevin jr.

reply

Damn, I just went back reading through these comments. That actually makes sense. And it kind of shows that despite Holy Wayne being kind of a a-hole for impregnating multiple women, it's possible he did have a connection with God (or David Burton).

reply

I only asked about Nora's husband because he Departed with Nora's children, yet throughout the episode she's only asked if she wanted to see her kids again. The only reason I asked was to see if there was any reason if she didn't want to see her husband again, other than she's in love with Kevin. Now that I remember that the husband was cheating on her with a pre-school teacher, I now understand a bit more why she wouldn't want to see her husband anymore.

reply

Thank you for doing this Adam.

I'm a bit confused. Why would she pay 20k to get incinerated?

Apparently those women in Australia thought that chief of police was our Kevin Garvey from Miracle, right? Well, I guess they found out he isn't.

At least I know what happened to Lilly now.

Nora and Kevin are perfect for each other, aren't they?

reply

Nora's at her breaking point, I think. She lost her husband and kids, and spent three years paying prostitutes to come to her house and shoot her while she wears a bullet proof vest as a coping mechanism. She then met Kevin, began dating him, and then found baby Lilly on his doorstep. Lilly became her new coping mechanism, with Kevin and Jill being icing on the cake. She then spent the next year, being a family with Lilly, Kevin and Jill until they moved to Miracle. After the events of Season 2, Lilly's mother came back seeking custody, and Nora then spent another three years not only trying to get over the loss of her children, but Lilly as well. Jill's moved out and gone away to college, and all Nora has left now is Kevin, but he's not enough. She's regressed to being the old Nora Durst we knew from Season 1, meaning she's very emotional unstable and self destructive again. She's spent seven years trying to cope with her losses, and nothing has worked. Kevin suggests having a kid with her, but Nora does and/but she doesn't want a kid with him for conflicting reasons. She does want to have a kid with him because she loves him, but she can't because she'll feel bad about the children she's lost already. Or perhaps she feels like the child she'll have with Kevin will disappear too because of her being deemed "Nora Cursed".

Then, out of the blue, after seven years of trying to cope with her losses, a celebrity from the 1980s that most people do not remember (at least, that's how I see Mark Linn-Baker anyways) calls her up and tells her she has the chance to see her kids again. From what we've seen from Nora Durst in the past previous seasons, she has debunked everyone who crossed her path, trying to tell her that there's a reason why her family was taken, or how they were taken. Now, after seven years, and been putting up a good fight, trying to make due in what is left of the world, she's tired and worn out. She hears a possible BS story about how to disappear like the Departed, that most certainly will result in death, but she doesn't care anymore. She's got nothing to lose. She wants to end her pain, regardless if she dies or not. She spent seven years trying not to succumb to the insanity the world has delved into. Now, she's giving in to it. The only shitty thing about this is that she's taking Kevin along with her, and he doesn't know what she intends on doing. Someone above mentioned Nora getting vaporized, and Kevin sacrificing himself to save her. It's probably going to be more than that. It's going to be him showing her that he truly is the Messiah her brother Matt, John and Michael claim he is to be. He'll probably die saving her, and she'll end up living in Australia, under the name Sarah. Why? As shown in this episode, self destructive Nora does not care about letting a legacy be a legacy (the man on the tower). She had to debunk that to make herself feel good, and not allow others to be easily and foolishly led. By the end of the season, after Kevin saves her and brings her back from the "Other Side", she's going to allow Kevin's legacy to continue, and in Kevin's legacy, both her and Kevin departed on the seventh anniversary of the Departure. Nora will live the rest of her life knowing exactly what happened to Kevin, while the rest of the world is foolishly led to believe Kevin sacrificed himself for humanity (that is, if Matt's book gets published), when really Kevin sacrificed himself for Nora. And Kevin's sacrifice will not only be remembered by Nora in turning her life around (hopefully in a positive way), but will be remembered for generations to come if Matt's book gets published, and Kevin is celebrated as a religious figure.

At least, that's what I think will happen anyway.

Great analysis!

reply

Great stuff, thanks.
However, how does Kevin bring her back from the Other Side? I assume he is not bringing himself back. What is the Other Side?

I know Kevin went through some weird stuff before in season 2 coming back out of the ground, so I suppose he could do it again coming back from the Other Side, if he does come back.

Come to Australia and bring 20 000 dollars sounds fishy to me. I don't think there are any scientists over there. Looks to me like someone's trying to lure them there (Kevin's dad maybe?).

Tom telling Nora that the baby wasn't for her, but for his dad was very harsh. That was the last thing she needed to hear at that moment.

I know Mark Linn-Baker isn't a big star, but I thought "Ha, they got Larry from Perfect Strangers.". I was tickled by that.

I dozed off for a bit when the women were drowning the man. But were they sacrifising him, or checking to see if it was the right Kevin?

I wish I had more of a memory of what happened in previous seasons lol

reply

They were trying to find the 'right' Kevin, but ended up killing the dude.

reply

They drowned the Australian police chief because they thought he was Kevin Garvey. It's like religious fanatics drowning, hanging, and burning witches. They're guided by their faith to do horrible things, but it's all in the pursuit of executing God's plan.
