I've yet to hear a good reason for why it was there - not that I'm complaining.

Don't know but it was great cinema. We need more lesbian kissing in Hollywood movies.

Apparently random lesbian makeout sessions are how white women console each other according to modern television & film

Alejandro G. Iñárritu is the Mexican version of Harvey Weinstein so it was in the movie because he just wanted to see it.
