A proper way to subvert expectations

Was in Live and Let Die when Bond is trapped on an island surrounded by crocodiles. He uses his magnetic watch to try to pull a nearby canoe over to him only to discover it’s tied to a tree and therefore won’t come to him. So instead of what we thought would happen (Bonds gadget would bail him out) Bond instead has to make use of his surroundings and has to get himself out of the situation by himself by jumping over the backs of crocodiles.

Rian Johnson’s way of subverting expectations is to basically turn once competent characters into completely useless buffoons and to basically stick a middle finger up to the fan base

Roger Moore subvert croc-spectations.

Not to mention, subverting expectations doesn't work when the movie can't even commit to its own subversions.

reply

And the subversions are basically there to mock the audience for having actual expectations
