I think that if you can look at it with a pure empty unadulterated state of mind you will find that The Last Jedi is a legitimately great film. Now when there is something as massive a cultural phenomenon like Star Wars it's a given that people will feel a sense of ownership and have a preconceived notion of how things should be but I do believe that given time when the world has had enough time to adapt to the franchise as a whole the ST will come to be regarded with the same affection as the OT.

On it's own, TLJ might not be all that bad but it's a terrible sequel to the very mediocre TFA and it's a disgrace as a followup to the OT. So I guess if you ignore TFA and the OT completely, and view TLJ as a standalone film, it might work...or maybe not.

Time didn't tell for the prequels, TPM in particular.

TPM certainly wasn't 100% hated upon release. It was only after a decade of heavy scrutiny they are considered some of the worst films ever made. People like RLM have made livings off of raging on this film.

tfa did NOT improve over time. tlj will actually suffer over time, as it should.

I loathed TFA but loved TLJ. I think you’re right. Probably the same with Solo. People are having a good time roasting it online but it’s getting good reviews.

I agree. I think it wasn't the film the fans envisioned, and some don't like the character arc of Luke, but it is a good film on its own merits. It's even a good Star Wars film. I think it's the best SW film made since Empire.

It would be considered amazing as a stand alone sci-fi outside of the star Wars universe,with only some very minor script changes, but I think that disconnect is a huge part of the problem. Definitely not as bad as TPM.

What really confused me was that it seems like 30 years after RotJ we would be in the middle of a new republic, not a new order of the empire. The plot should have been agents of evil (Sith?) inside the fledgling new republic trying to start a new order, and the heroes of the film trying to find and stop them. A James Bond type Star Wars movie? Maybe in another 30.

I felt they were more concerned with rebooting the franchise than they were with continuity. And really, JJ did exactly the same thing with Star Trek with very positive results. But Star Wars fans are a touchy crowd.

Perhaps or perhaps not. The anti-TLJ camp have firmly dug their heels in and now Disney is giving up on taking chances anymore. Thanks to them. If they complain about Disney being safe five years from now, they've only themselves to blame.
