80s Sword & Sorcery vibe?

Like Krull, Beastmaster, Hawk The Slayer, DragonSlayer, the 2 Conans, Fire & Ice, Highlander, Masters of the Universe, (and of course Empire/Jedi)

Luke/Rey = Connery/Lambert in Highlander (& Yoda/Luke in ESB of course)

The unusual rock formations island = like something from Krull

Yeah I agree, I love all the movies you listed too.

The trope of the wizard who's a hermit in hiding and who doesn't want to help anyone has been used many times, but was a common motift in 80's sword and sorcery films, definitely.

Perhaps that's why the island scenes with Luke are my favourite. The sword and sorcery genre of fantasy is very close to my heart.

The whole SW concept was always about heroic fantasy with space battles.

True but TLJ seemed to be quite reminiscent of the 1980s Fantasy movies - also see Thor Ragnarok

reply

I didn't say you were wrong. I just pointed out that the overall concept was never really Sci-Fi.
Personally, I found TLJ incredibly boring. I find it very depressing that with all their resources and their access to the most talented people in the business, this is the best Disney could do.
As for Thor Ragnarok it was pretty formulaic but good enough to fill a slow evening.

The long shots of Rey practicing with the lightsaber on the cliff definitely reminded me of a similar shot in Highlander....

reply

Yes absolutely the shots (that were used in the early trailers) were influenced by Highlander for sure
