Why not just shoot the gattling gun operator?!

The two men in the bell tower were able to pick men off the back of *running horses* who were pursuing Pratt's character, yet they didn't even attempt a shot at the gattling gun operator, who was maybe a third of the way further?

It might make a tiny bit of sense if the wagon were in a better strategic position, like at the crest of a hill. But they weren't. It was absurd. Also, the townsfolk didn't send out five or ten men on horses to circle around from the back? Yet they had the time and foresight to dig a friggin' trench and rig explosives?!

What an absurd movie.

I thought it was even 'better' that they have sharpshooter Goody come in from out of town to warn townsfolk about the Gatling gun. Couldn't he have found someplace to shoot them off one by one from the high grass instead? There were less than a dozen men way out of town. No, instead he runs INTO town past the Gatling gun crowd.

I thought about this as well. It would have made more sense for him to snipe them from a distance... but then again, what if he died before he could take them all out? They wouldn't have known about the Gatling gun at all. It was a minor inconvenience to the plot, though.

Goody had a Winchester Model 1873, which was chambered for relatively low-powered pistol cartridges such as .44-40, and it had iron sights to boot (no scope). That's about as far from a sniper rifle as you can get.

That gun was a beast
Im not sure that they could have hit those guys
Seemed pretty far...im no deadeye but i own a lot of those open sight lever action rifles for the deer around here
Not sure thats such an easy shot to be honest

He could have taken the shoot before he rode back into the town and climbed the bell tower.....
