Horrible, horrible, horrible attempt at a Scottish accent. As a Scot, I don't understand casting an English actor as a Scot when his accent is that awful. Rewrite the character as English or hire a Scottish actor!

Then again, in some parts, her really sounded russian or eastern european. And in other parts, he did indeed sound like a caricature Scot.

I just watched the movie with the commentary by the Scottish director Kevin MacDonald. He explained that instead of having the actors use an accent that one would normally hear in movies (e.g. in Edinburgh), that he deliberately chose the Aberdeen accent. He said that this accent is more representative of the tough working class Scottish sailor, and that the accent is common in Aberdeen because of the seafaring tradition there. The accent is meant to convey a no-nonsense quality that matches the character played by Jude.
shareHmmm, like the Australian accent, the Scottish one is hard to nail. People always walk the fine line between an authentic accent and pure ham.
I imagine, as it is for many Australians, really frustrating when they get non-native actors to do our accent and completely screw it up to the point of being un-watchable.
