That accent....

Horrible, horrible, horrible attempt at a Scottish accent. As a Scot, I don't understand casting an English actor as a Scot when his accent is that awful. Rewrite the character as English or hire a Scottish actor!

reply

Can't say that i noticed his accent much, other than it isnt his usual English one.

So it was probably fine for all those not from scotland, who may have a more sensitive ear to it.

reply

I agree with you, MarwoodWalks, and besides, if he spoke with what I guess is a "genuine" Scottish accent, the movie would have to have had subtitles.

reply

that is not a "Scottish accent"... his character is from Aberdeen, and that is how they speak there.

reply

And where's Aberdeen? In Turkmenistan?

Oh wait...it's in Scotland.

reply

But to talk of a 'Scottish' accent is like saying there is one American accent or one English accent: accents vary by area in Scotland just as they do everywhere else in the world! I have a couple of Aberdonian colleagues and Jude Law's attempt at an Aberdonian accent was, for the most part, not bad to my ears.

reply

His character is supposed to be from Aberdeen. I am an Aberdonian and I can tell you that is not an Aberdonian accent and that is not how they speak there. That said I can generally get past accents that are not spot on because they are not really the most important thing in a film. It was passable as a generic Scottish accent and it would have been better if he was billed as a Scot. If they had thrown in a few doric sayings that would have been nice too, then I could have really bought into it being of the area but then no-one would have known what was said.....unless of course they subtitled that too!!

reply

Balls!... He did a fine job with that accent! You're obviously better... yea? Also do you look and act better an all? Send your c.v. in. We'll take a gander ;)

reply

Studies have been done and the Scot's accent is said to sound more truthful than any other accent in the U.K..Look it up and you will see what i mean.
Maybe thats why they use Scots accents in certain movies ? i dont know but as a fellow scot this sounds like a mix between Aberdeen and Edinburgh with a bit of Russian put in for good measure lol.
Why they never picked a Scottish actor to do this part ill never know.
Actors like Gerard butler would have better movies to star in so that rules out most good Scots actors but i agree that Robert Carlyle would have sounded more believable that Law.
Yes Jude Law is a good actor but his "Scottish" accent is really poor.

reply

I thought it was Russianie too

reply

its actually a yorkshire accent that's rated top for honesty and sincerity.
I also found his accent ok, i still got lost in the film and enjoyed iy

reply

His Scottish accent was fantastic. He also seemed quite bulky and hard nosed which suited his role.

How exactly would you have him sound better or more authentic?

reply

He didn't sound in any way authentic. It was very forced, and almost comedic at times.

reply

Jude Law's accent as all over the place, Scottish, Russian, English, it changed with every other sentence..

Fanboy : a person who does not think while watching.

reply

Not even to mention those lame Russian accents.
Just as worse !

Odd, considering that the Russians were all native Russian or Ukrainian. Most of them didn't actually speak English.

reply

Similarly, I hate it when Brits are cast as Americans or vice versa. Why add the extra (and unnecessary) level of BS to the situation? There are plenty of American actors to play American roles and Brits to play British roles.

reply

With one exception though...
Andrew Lincoln does a pretty good job.

There are plenty of non-Americans who can pull off American accents with little problem. After seeing Naomi Watts in Mullholland Drive I would never have guessed that she's Australian. Kate Winslet, Emily Blunt, ...really there's no shortage of actresses that can do an American accent.

For some reason it seems less common for non-American men to be asked to do an American accent. But there are also plenty of actors who can do it: Tom Wilkinson in In the Bedroom comes to mind.

Meryl Streep was asked how she could do so many accents well and she said it just comes down to listening. Some actors like Streep are excellent at listening. Others are not.

Kevin Costner comes to mind as the actor who has butchered to most different accents: English in Robin Hood, New Orleans in JFK, Boston in Thirteen Days...really amazing stuff.

Then there's late-career Sean Connery, who just did every role in his Scots accent, regardless of the alleged ethnicity of the character. :)
