ALTERED CONFUSION

On the old zero (forget it!) to ten (perfection!) scale, I rate Altered Carbon a seven. I liked the idea of people transferring their consciousness from one body to another, and I also liked its film noir Blade Runner-style vision of the future, but I did not like the numerous sub-plots and plot twists it kept throwing at me.

The series was 10 hours, while the audio book was 17+, so they didn't pad it out too much from the source material. Crazy side plot points and twists are noir classics. I'd give it a 7-8 also. It was very good.

I just watched the complete first season. This is Blade Runner meets HBO’s Westworld, in terms of production design and fundamental narrative, and not nearly as good as either of them. The scripting is uninvolving yet confusing, but at least the acting is terrible. They had a decent production budget and went low-rent on the things that matter. To me, this seems typical of Netflix, which is why I don’t subscribe. Comcast is having a Free Watchathon Week.
