maybe Besson miscast the leads deliberately ?

Seems to be alot of posts moaning about how miscast the 2 lead were, I guess a more mature looking square jawed 6ft+ leading man type like Ben Affleck and a smoking hot ScarJo would've been more acceptable and more in keeping with the comic?

but it seems to me that Besson was maybe going for something realistic in the idea of future young people of the 28th? Century - where 2 unlikely scrawny unusual looking types are the leads to create a feeling of something being slightly 'off'/unusual in them. as by then who knows what people look like due to all kinds of factors (DNA manipulation like in Gattaca, futuristic cosmetic stuff, humans being affected by various changing environmental stuff etc) I can't imagine the average 30 odd year old of the 28th Century will look too much like they do today ..

If that was the case, then he should have cast all the humans as spindly and underdeveloped. There was a scene where Valerian and Laureline enter the military command room to provide security, and the script seemed to call for them to look like the biggest badasses around, people who make these career desk officers look like, well, desk jockeys. Instead, they looked like two high school kids surrounded by men who looked much more badass than they did.

The thing is, the idea of agents who look like gangly kids could have worked, if the script had made it clear that they weren't so much badasses as clever dicks who looked so harmless that they were always able to sneak in under other people's radar. But no, they were written up as badasses, and when I saw this in the theater the whole audience laughed at the scene where the spindly Laureline punched out Clive Owen. And Clive Owen is not a physically impressive man.

I think you got it there. They were harmless looking but completely deadly. The way Valerian welded the knives in the troll fisher banquet was high class and the way he took out the dark storm troopers with even more precision just goes to show their innocent but deadly look was their cover.

Trust me I've seen this IRL. I went to a Capoeira/Martial arts exhibition and there was this one Israeli kid that looked like he had just graduated high school. He was plain, no muscular build whatsoever but could fly through the air like you wouldn't believe and was an expert on Krav maga. It was actually kinda scary what he was capable of while seeming as if to appear as a mall rat. As they call some fast cars "sleepers" he was a sleeper of a human killer.

Of course it was deliberate. All decisions in movie-making are deliberate.

Except for those that aren’t.

She was easily way hotter than Scarlet Johannsen, but perhaps it was targeted at the younger demographic, not you old farts.

reply

THEYRE BOTH BEAUTIFUL BUT YOURE INSANE.🙄

reply

Lol your allcaps demonstrates you're insane. However, you're also stupid. I am just writing that she is hotter than Johannsen not that Johannsen isn't hot.

reply

DON'T BE A LITTLE DICK...I SIMPLY SAID YOU ARE INSANE FOR THINKING DELEVINGNE IS HOTTER THAN JOHANSSON.
