Thoughts on the ending

*spoiler*

Ok so saw this for the first time last night and loved it. Very sad and real film. The ending was my favorite part because it shows that after all that mess that happened even if he was acquitted of the charges he's still going to have that huge shadow over him and people are never going to look at him the same again. Basically noone trusts him anymore. But the ending where someone shoots at him in the forest. A lot of people say it was a hallucination by him but when I saw it. The shooter had a silhouette like a young boy and you notice that the shooter runs off like a kid. Now my first thought was Marcus. I think he was still being affected by his fathers accusations and is still being looked down on. Maybe his only course of action was to shoot his father and end all this mess. I think this whole situation was too much for him and traumatized him to the point where he now believes the lies and hates his father. That's my opinion though, anyone else think the same?

It wasn't Marcus. The only emotion he showed toward his father in the film was total love, admiration and never once did he even slightly start to believe the lies.

There's no indication at all that he would have done a complete 180 from who he was in the rest of the movie.

C'mon guys!!
It was just his fear to be still not accepted...
I think in the community the suspect will always snake in theri minds...

I subscribe to the theory some others have posted here that the shot was real. But it really doesn't matter who the shooter was - the point being that for some people Lucas's name will never be cleared - he will always be guilty. And Lucas knows that too. If the director had intended for us to know who the shooter was, he would have shown us more clearly. It could be anyone.

For your information, on the DVD version of "The Hunt", an alternate ending is included (similar to but obviously not the one used in the film). In the alternate, the shooter hits his mark, striking Lucas in the chest (in the heart). Lucas dies instantly collapsing to the leaf-covered forest floor where he lies motionless. The shooter flees as in the original film and the woods remain silent. I think this alternate ending supports the fact that we are also viewing reality with the theatrical ending.

Everyone who says its an hallucination is dumb af. It was obviously Theos son. Its very clear

I went back to watch the last 10 minutes of the film from the time Lukas arrives with Marcus and with his Polish girlfriend and Marcus greets Torsten, Theo's son, then I rewatched the scene of the rifle handing ceremony for Marcus and I see Torsten giving Lukas really nasty looks, then I rewatched the scene where Lukas almost gets his head blown off by the mystery shooter, then see the shooter's silhouette, and I concluded that yes, it's most likely Theo's son, Torsten.

Y'all are overthinking this.

It was the son.

Not his son, but Theo's

Loved the ending too and it probably is the son of Theo who fired the rifle, but the point is really to show Lucas that this thing hasn't gone away for him. He'll never fully reclaim that trust from everybody after this incident, whether it's through someone trying to scare him with a rifle, or someone giving him a look and keeping their thoughts to themselves, as we saw in the previous scene.
