How does this even work?

You have a cartoon character Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny...

Both of them are far older but would never get away with this.

Both appear to be owned. By Disney, WB

What went wrong with Winnie the Pooh...?

I thought Disney owned it?

reply

The original Winnie the Pooh wasn't Disney's. The Disney's version of Winnie the Pooh is still copyrighted. That's why they can only does this edgy horror style to make it as far away from Disney's version, or else they'll get sued if they make it even slightly similar to Disney's cartoon.

reply

I think Disney could have shut this down if they wanted to. With enough money and clout, anything can be shut down, legally or not. Winnie just isn't valuable enough to bother protecting.

reply

By suing a movie no one actually sees, Disney would only give them way more exposure for free. Just leave it alone and nobody cares.

The book entered public domain in 2022. As long as character don't copy Disney they're fine.
