Don't understand the love for this film

The story idea itself was quite interesting. Guy falls for disembodied character. Not so far fetched when you consider people who fall in love over the phone or communicating in writing.

What put me off was the whole vibe of the film. Everything was so dull and bleak. No one seemed to have a life and most of them were *beep* hipsters.

Theodore himself was a weirdo, and that's before he even met Samantha, and the only person to call him out for this only did so because he refused to have sex with her.

Overall a dull, miserable excuse of a film.

I agree with you. My girlfriend got bored with this and left the room about half way through. I stuck with it but really wish I hadn't bothered.

For one thing I thought there was too much swearing. I normally don't mind swearing but I found it out of place in this movie. If they had limited it a bit more then it would have had more impact.

And how could Samantha or Theo hope to sell Theo's letters in a book? Surely the people that paid for him to write those letters would own the copyright (or maybe the company Theo worked for), under the Work For Hire copyright concept?

It looked like the OS was actually "in the cloud", since it could communicate simultaneously with other users and would require a great deal of processing power. So why did Theo install it on his computer at the beginning?

All in all a very dismal movie.

You can't *beep* a phone!

I thought it was magical. I've rarely seen better depictions of the heart-wrenching feeling of solitude and of the magic it is too find and fall for someone new. Add to that the beautiful cinematography and the breathtaking colours. Stunning, really. I'll never forget this film.

I thought the movie was alright (I gave it a 7) but I haven't really thought about it since I saw it in the theatre. It felt like a very hipster movie, and since 2010s are the hipster decade, that means in 10 years it will no longer be as relevant as we will have a new style and new generation of people who will no longer be into that style. It was a fine movie but it just feels like it's too trendy. Too much of that trendy feel most certainly ages a film. Look at She's the Man (2006). Very different film of course, but it is now 10 years old and it looks like and feels every one of those years. No more preppy/emo-luxurious-striving for riches, now it's retro-hippy-trashy-classy throwback.

Styles change and I guarantee you that in a decade, Her will encapsulate perfectly what the 2010s style and culture was like, and little more. I found it to be (as I said earlier) a bit forgettable. But it wasn't a bad movie by any means.

Contrasting, I think Under the Skin is one of the best films of the decade so far, because that one doesn't feature any societal or fashionable trends to rule it. It's a work singular to itself. Although modern, it is set in it's own little world, which I bet will age nicely. A lot of people hated it but I think it will gain its audience and better appreciation down the road. I hope :)

To the comment above. You're really making a point using she's the man? Come on... She's the man isn't even a good enough example. Nor should it ever be mentioned in the same sentence as Her.

I liked it, because it was a new, or newish, take on a love story, particularly involving technology. Aside from old Twilight Zone episodes, I can't think of another that tackled this topic, let alone so well.

Yes, everything was bleak, and the main character embodied modern loneliness. That was a large part of the plot.

indeed, It had a Twilight Zone vibe but set in a Romantic movie which also tackles loneliness and isolation.

Great comparison! I hadn't thought of it, but you're right, it had a very modern Twilight Zone feel to it, but as a romance. Can't think of any TZ romances, except for the episode with the guy stuck on a remote planet with his human-like woman robot.

Funny you mentioned that episode (The Lonely S01-E07), I re-watched it recently and had been talking about it on the Twilight Zone Board.

The Twilight Zone board and its posters here ROCK! Amazing board. If I knew more about the episodes, I'd post there more. As it is, all I can do is say things like "You know the one where [fill in loose plot description]?" :D

Thanks for telling me not only the name of the episode, but which season and episode number it was.

reply

No problem, I'm a huge Twilight Zone fan and know a lot about it, so if you have any question feel free to ask :)

reply

Thanks! You posters on the TZ board are amazingly friendly and helpful. And knowledgeable.
