So who should have played Napoleon Solo?

I've seen some of the old episodes, and it was a series that only worked because star Robert Vaughn was SO charming that he made all the implausible scripts seem fun instead of ridiculous.

Which didn't happen again in the film remake, as Henry Cavill lacked the seemingly effortless charm of Vaughn. In fact his acting was the opposite of effortless, as he put so much effort into trying to sound like an American that he didn't have any energy left with which to be amusing. It's no coincidence that the movie's best scene, the car chase with the sandwich, has no dialogue.
