six months to build up positive hype

sure you can argue that they've been building hype for 13 years, but not really. the "hype" if you can all it that, has been "lol are they still making this??" or "will it flop??" which is hardly hype. with the state that cinema is currently in, i highly doubt this will work in the favor of the studios. this new trailer that dropped was incredibly lame too, and i doubt it will hook people the same way Star Wars 7's teaser trailer hooked people. maybe they're just trying to dump it and get it overwith? they have til december to get people as excited as they were in 2009.

or this film could gross 5 billion and i just look like a total moron this time next year

I've never watched Avatar but I checked this trailer out. It all looks a little bit silly to me.

The trailer was basically a showcase for the world these characters live in but it just looks like a beautiful video game. I much prefer on location filiming (real life locations).

A lot of kids these days are reared on video games so who knows...maybe they'll love it.

I have no dog in this fight. It will be interesting to see if it's a mega hit like the first one or if it's a major flop.

The first Avatar only had a few months of hype too when its first trailer dropped, and it became the highest grossing film of all time when unadjusted for inflation. We'll see if James Cameron's name still holds weight, but something tells me this movie will be similar. Maybe not $2.8 billion similar, but close enough.

Star Wars 7 was hyped even before the teaser trailer but yes that had a much stronger teaser trailer than Avatar 2’s.

Also studios usually don’t dump a film in December.

I predict this film much like Spider-Man: No Way Home last December will become the highest grossing film of the year.

It may even cause other films like Shazam 2 to underperform at the box office. We’ll have to wait and see but a lot of people thought the first Avatar was going to flop as well before release and it didn’t happen.
