first movie sucked

It certainly did suck, it was hyped to success by the studio. Some of Cameron's other films were sold on gimmicks but had original stories and interesting characters, so when the gimmick became outdated the film remained entertaining.

Too much teeth?

I watched Avatar (2009) on a real 3-D IMAX screen and it was stunning even if the story wasn't that original. I very much enjoyed the experience and I will definitely check out the sequels.
