Why cancel one of the funniest shows on TV?
This show is so funny... They renew shows that have had their time and should come to an end... but cancel new and refreshing shows... I just don't get it.

shareThe TV networks don't care how many people watch their shows any more. They are now actively measuring how many people watch the commercials. They don't care if a show is any good or not, they just care about people sticking around for the commercials.
Ever since I've had a DVR in my house, I skip as many commercials as possible. I don't even know about big TV advertising campaigns any more because I never see them. So the network ratings are being skewed toward households that don't have DVRs, and/or households that are too lazy to use their DVR to skip the commercials. That explains a lot of network programming.
What's funny is that the networks created this problem themselves by adding so much commercial time that it became really attractive to invent a device that would allow you to skip them all. If you watch an old half-our TV show on DVD, you will notice that the episodes are a lot longer than those of a new half-hour TV show on DVD. If you take out the commericals, today's half-hour shows are between 20 and 21.5 minutes. So with my DVR I can watch almost 3 half-hour shows in a hour. But since the TV shows have less time between commercials to develop stories and characters, the general quality of network TV has really gone down.
BillyRufus, then how do you explain Nurse Jackie, Sopranos, United States of Tara, Hung. These shows were and are on cable channels that don't have commercials. It's a nice theory, but doesn't make sense. The commercials are ways the network can gain more money buy selling advertisement. But if no one is watching the show at all, then there's the problem.
I am not just this body, I am from before it existed
Unless I'm mistaken, those shows are on premium channels, that you have to pay for. Subscription fees and subsequent DVD/Digital sales is how those shows make money. Networks have to sell advertising to make money since those channels are free to the viewer. If they can't sell advertisements during a show then there is no reason to have the show on the air.
share@callmethemaster: You nailed it. Premium channels get so much of their money from subscriptions that they can afford to run commercials afterwards. Personally, I do not have cable or even an antenna so just download anything I want to watch.
I just finished watching the finale and I do not think it was a bad way to go out. At least there was not a cliffhanger, although I think the Madhari relationship was kind of thrown in there for the last 2 episodes.
I DVR all the shows I watch so I can just zip through the commercials

How do they know what you are watching our what you are not watching unless you are a Nielsen ratings system household? Oh, wait...they don't. I never understood why people think that the networks somehow actually know what all of us are watching at any given time.
FOX is a prime example of this, and Family Guy is a perfect example of their many frequent f' ups to cancel popular shows that don't pull in Nielsen household ratings. After they canceled it they were shocked by how many people were buying the DVD sets of the show. Then it took off on Adult Swim. Then they renewed it. But it's like they have NO CLUE if we like the show (and are watching it) based on what we say about it on the Internet. It's Nielsen only, apparently.
Yer cable box, sattelitte reciever, DVR, Tivo, etc. has a built-in "Neilson" device in it. If you watch 20 minutes of "Idol", Fox knows it. They've been incorporating these "neilson" chips into the recievers since the mid-90's.
As for 'outsourced", the first 4-6 weeks were very funny, then it got stale fast. Damn shame, it had a lot of potential.

So how have these devices been relaying this information back since the 90s?

Even if you hate Uwe Boll, give Postal a try, be offended or entertained.
Hope its still going.
Just caught this show. It's so sweet and funny it should be a hit. It might be a sensitive subject but really anyone watching is more than likely to want to go to India and see this wonderful culture firsthand.
Rufus,
Any more? they never did. It's always been about garnering ratings to set higher ad rates. They're in business to make money.

"Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana."
Very original, very funny, attractive characters.... Of course OUTSOURCED was preordained to be canceled. I too will buy the complete set on dvd, along with Pushing Daisies and Human Target.
shareI've said it before, and I'll say it again... If it's any good at all, NBC cancels it. All they air is:
(N)othing
(B)ut
(C)rap
FYI, I LOVED Outsourced. This is the first I've heard of it not being renewed. Though it doesn't surprise me at all.
Maybe we should do a campaign like the fans did for "Jericho." Send the network bags of curry or something.

I'm with u on this. This is the pick of the bunch for new shows.
It's funny, and always a happy ending. And the direction it could have taken is limitless. Not a happy camper DownUnder.
I agree, between the shows that refuse to die and the reality shows, cancelling Outsourced is just a joke. No wonder NBC is doing so badly.
shareSucks... they keep The Office and 30 Rock, but cancel this? Least I still got my Parks and Rec
