What was the book ending?

How does the book ending differ from this film's ending? I saw a couple of comments suggesting the book had a more interesting and thought provoking ending.

I haven't read the book, but I looked it up on Wikipedia. Two big changes:

The little girl is shot accidentally and dies. This doesn't stop the apocalypse, since it wasn't a willing sacrifice.

The couple decides that they won't give in. They both survive, and the global catastrophes keep getting worse.

Until the part when father1 gets the gun is more or less the same. But then one of the woman wrestles him for the gun and he accidentally kills her. Big guy (Bautista) then wrestles him for the gun and the little girl gets shot. Father1 and Father2 decide the world suck and it does not deserve to be saved, so they let the apocalypses come.

I liked the movie, but the ending was weak. The way the book ends sounds much better. I wish they would have kept that.

Thank you, I like this ending better. It's more interesting. Sad that US movies have to be warm-and-fuzzified for audiences.

reply

Oh, that's way better, lol. Way bleaker.

M. Night, why change those key details, (especially the final line), and do the book injustice?

reply

Honestly I think I prefer the film, the book sounds double sad and we don't need any more films with downer endings.

It's 'bin dun' too If you want to see a cabin based film where they choose the apocalypse watch The Cabin in the Woods.
